Our school has recently updated the title of our yearbook, changing it from Squaw Butte Saga to Butte Saga. This change aligns with federal law and broader efforts to remove derogatory and outdated terminology from public spaces. In 2021, the U.S. Department of the Interior, under Secretary Deb Haaland, took action to replace the term “squaw” in federal place names due to its long history as a racial and gender-based slur against Indigenous women. This effort was part of Secretarial Order 3404, which directed the Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to remove the term from approximately 650 sites across the country (U.S. Department of the Interior, 2022). The move followed similar actions taken at state and local levels to ensure respectful representation of Indigenous cultures and histories.
Because our yearbook title contained this term, the decision to change the name was made in accordance with these federal guidelines. By renaming it Butte Saga, we honor our community’s history while also demonstrating respect for Indigenous voices and the evolving standards of cultural sensitivity. This update reflects our commitment to inclusivity and historical awareness, ensuring that our school publications align with contemporary ethical and legal standards.
