Two Rivers Cross Country Captain Expectations
The process for captain eligibility is to meet individually (you are expected to arrange the meeting) with coach Kluznik at some point in time by Friday, October 17th to discuss the position. Please come to that meeting having both read as well as printed out and signed the form below. Each captain candidate will be considered for the position based off the leadership they demonstrate through the winter off season and the spring track season. We will then announce the captains for the 2026 season at our informational meeting during the final exam week in June. The captains that we announce will then be responsible for leading summer training. The coaches will be the ones to determine the leadership positions for next season and the decision will be based on demonstrated leadership as outlined in the agreement below.
Below is a set of expectations for incoming cross country captains that each captain candidate must agree to in order to be considered by the coaching staff. These are non-negotiable expectations that we have for our future team leaders. To ensure strong leadership, we feel that these expectations need to be presented to everyone so that there is a clear understanding of what it means to be a captain for the cross country team. We expect our captains to fully commit themselves to the team both in season and out, and we want to impress upon everyone that this is more than just a title or an award to be won. The role of captain requires both discipline and sacrifice. That being said, the benefit will be that each captain will further strengthen themselves as both an athlete and as a leader as well as to make our team stronger beyond just their ability as a runner.
As a captain, I commit to:
1) 100% Attendance in season (including all August practices and meets)
2) Arriving at least five minutes early to practice each day and starting warm-ups on time
3) Leading and modeling a good warm-up both daily at practice and at meets
4) Rallying teammates at meets to cheer on other athletes
5) Being a positive team presence
6) Being a communicator between athletes and coaches
7) Helping lead school recruiting
8) Supporting and encouraging teammates and our team environment by planning, participating and encouraging participation by all teammates in team building activities such as but not limited to: pasta dinners, spirit wear/dress-up themes on meet days, conversations on runs, etc.
9) Being a role model and mentoring/getting to know younger athletes (this means routinely going beyond your immediate group of friends to include all of your teammates)
10) Fully participating in our weightroom sessions, both leading by example as well as encouraging others to complete their lifts to the best of their ability.
11) Fully participating in structured winter off season training, or fully participating in another varsity level sport during that time.
12) Running Track and Field in the spring or fully participating in another varsity level sport during that time.
13) Fully participating in structured summer off season training and committing to a minimum of 300 summer miles
14) Leading practices during the summer off season. Between yourself and the other captains, it is your responsibility to have at least one captain present each summer weekday for practice. In addition, it is an expectation that you would attend the majority of summer training days.
15) Arriving to the 2026 season at your top level of fitness when formal August practices begin and being able to consistently lead by example during the season in both practices and meets.
I am committing to the above expectations and by signing below I am agreeing to meet them fully. I understand that only by agreeing to the above expectations can my name be included in the process for determining next season's captains.
