Captain selection
Team Captains are selected using a four-dimensional evaluation system. The purpose of the four dimensional evaluation is to provide the best possible collaborative perspective and cooperative selection on the team members who will be serving as captains.
Requirements:
Must be a current sophomore or junior when applying (must be entering junior or senior year in the coming season)
Must be have completed at least one full season as a member of the team.
Must complete a written application with all questions completed and parent signature.
Steps:
1) Written Application (10%) Captain Application
Application is submitted, read, reviewed and evaluated by coaches prior to interview.
2) Team Ballots and Ranking (40%) Voting Ballot
All team members complete a 17 question leadership skills and readiness evaluation "ballot" for each of the captain candidates. The evaluation is an objective assessment based on a 5 point rating scale (1 is low, 5 is high) for each of the 17 questions. Team also assign a "top 3" ranking evaluation of the candidates. The points for each question for each candidate are then tallied and point totals for each question as well as the rankings. Results are then compared.
3) Interview of Candidate (20%)
Coaches interview each of the candidates in a 15 minute interview using an LNHS standardized captain interview questionnaire in addition to a few team -specific questions.
4) Coaches Evaluation (30%)
Team coaches each complete the captain-candidate evaluation ballot identical to team members. They objectively score and rank the candidates based on their subjective observations using the 17 questions.
Scoring and Selection
All four elements of are then cumulatively scored, compared and reviewed for consideration by the coaches for the final selection. If necessary, the Activities Director will complete an additional evaluation and make the final decision in cooperation with the Head Coach.
The number of Captains selected can vary. The number selected can be determined by, but not limited to:
The total number of returning members of the team
The strength of the candidates applying for captaincy
The degree of difference in the final scoring evaluation
