It’s always best to check with your particular Gemeinde but, in general, to bring your pet into the country, you'll need to follow these steps.

• You will need to register your pet with the Gemeinde and pay an annual fee. 

• You need to get your pet a passport that includes its vaccination record. 

• Finally, you must include pets in your personal liability insurance coverage.  

Switzerland has strict and less common animal wellbeing rules that you should learn. Some examples are

• • exercise minimums

  • the need to keep rabbits in pairs

  • no yelling at barking dogs

  • picking up waste

Pet Access

• Pets are allowed in most outdoor restaurants and many stores.  

• They can ride the Basel tram for free if they fit into a bag, but need a half-fare ticket if they aren’t in a bag.  

• They can not go into most shops that sell food like supermarkets, bakeries and butchers as well as many playgrounds.  

• The leash rules are seasonal to protect baby wild animals born in the spring. Dogs must stay on-leash from April 1-July 31, within 50 meters of the woods, in Basel Stadt and Basel Land.
