Competition Rules

Equipment

  • No mathematical equipment, mobile phones, calculators or any type may be brought into competitions.
  • Plain paper and pencils will be provided.
  • Students are allowed the use of a translating dictionary in book form only.

Teams

  • Teams will consist of 3 persons.

Questions

  • Questions will require critical thinking skills, creative insight, lateral thinking, problem solving and logic from topics traditionally taught to students in any middle school mathematics course. All will be chosen from those submitted by coaches.

Team Competition

  • Short questions will be distributed in sets of 4 short questions. Teams will be allowed 10 minutes for each set of questions with a warning after 8 minutes. Each team may give only 1 answer for each question.
        • Scoring will be as follows:
            • 1 correct answer = 2 points
            • 2 correct answers = 5 points
            • 3 correct answers = 8 points
            • 4 correct answers = 12 points
  • Multiple choice questions will also be distributed in sets of 15. Each question will have 5 choices for answers. Teams will be allowed 10 minutes for each set of questions with a warning after 8 minutes. Each team may give only 1 answer for each question.
        • Scoring will be as follows:
            • 1 point for each correct answer
  • Long questions will be distributed in sets of 3 questions. Teams will be allowed 15 minutes for each set of questions with a warning given after 13 minutes. Each team may only give 1 answer for each question.
        • Scoring will be as follows:
            • 1 correct answer = 4 points
            • 2 correct answers = 9 points
            • 3 correct answers = 15 points

Prizes

  • Trophies, prizes and medals will be awarded to the top three teams based on their team score on Saturday afternoon.
  • The Sunday Chase team winner will be announced on Sunday - prior to teams departing.
