Last year, one of our students, Noel from year 10MC, was awarded with the "Hong Kong Volunteer Award 2022 - Outstanding Youth Volunteers'' award by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau and the Agency for Volunteer Service (AVS). This award recognises the contributions and achievements of volunteers, corporations, etc. across Hong Kong. The scheme encourages young people to volunteer to help those in need.
The award recognises Noel’s volunteer work for helping children and the elderly. Tasks such as collecting and delivering food, as well as selling food to those in need are a few of the many volunteer jobs Noel has participated in. Among the many jobs, the one Noel feels the most important was delivering mooncakes to elderly centres.
A small challenge Noel faced as she grew older was that the children she was helping stayed the same age, and so the age gap between them kept on growing. It became harder to talk or get close with the children. Nevertheless, Noel still found a way to help no matter the situation or age differences.
This was also not Noel’s first award. Noel’s received lots of praise for her volunteer work before as well, which reflects Noel’s strong desire to help others. During our interview, Noel mentioned how easy it was to help others. All we needed to do was to spend a little of our own time to help those in need. Additionally, it is also important to help people of all ages as they might just need a little help from us.
"Don't spend time on your own, spend it on others."
Parrots. Found all around the globe, they are incredible animals captivating people from across the world with their colourful feathers. However, there's another reason why they have become so famous- The fact that they can mimic and speak human words. But why exactly do they do this?
An explanation to this is that parrots are social animals, meaning they want to fit in with the rest of their friends. In the wild, parrots usually make bird sounds because they are surrounded by other birds. But around humans, parrots often imitate human words because they see their owners as part of their new family, or “flock.” They copy human sounds to fit in with their human flock.
Another explanation to why parrots mimic human words applies more to baby parrots. While most animals are born with their species' distinctive calls programmed into their brains, parrots are among the few species that need to learn their species communication patterns, like humans. So when baby parrots grow up living with humans, they won't really learn normal parrot calling and instead learn human words and noises. This also means that with some training, parrots can learn the meaning of some words, name their favourite food and even end up counting. Parrots are also known to mimic sounds from other animals with reasons ranging from scaring predators away to finding parrots from the same flock.
These are the most common reasons for a parrot to mimic human sounds, if you are interested in learning more in-depth on why parrots mimic human words and just about any sound, click on the link provided below for a good starting point.
For better or worse, YouTube Rewind, the annual end of year video featuring everything big that happened on the YouTube Platform that year with content creators from all around the world, has been confirmed to be cancelled permanently.
In a tweet over at YouTube's official Twitter account, Youtube thanked creators who volunteered to partake in Rewind over the years and said that they would be "refocus our energies on celebrating you and the trends that make YouTube with a different and updated kind of experience - stay tuned! "
The decision to cancel rewind indefinitely was said to not due to the large number of criticisms received in recent years but due to the fact that the platform has grown so massive that it was impossible to encapsulate its vastness and diversity within a minute-long compilation. Instead, YouTube will be turning to the community themselves to create their own YouTube rewind, similar to what Mr Beast did in 2020, and award shows such as the Streamy Awards.
It isn't all bad news though as YouTube does seem to have something in the work, teasing to that it was planning a global end of year interactive experience. For now, they declined to disclose further information on this project. We'll just have to wait and see.
It seems after 16 years of intense fighting, the people of South Korea have finally gotten what they had so hard struggled for. The green onion cereal?! Yes, you heard that right. For 16 years, the people of South Korea have been fighting with the Kellogs corporations to introduce, what can be presumed as the weirdest breakfast cereal ever thought of by mankind. So how did the fight for Green Onion Cereal begin? Why would anyone even want green onion cereal? and most importantly, is it any good?
This bizarre story starts back in 2004 when Kellogg's cooperations started a new advertising campaign in which the public could vote on which cereal they wanted them to release next. A TV commercial offered two cartoon candidates in the presidential election for the Chex Choco Empire - chocolate-flavoured Cheki and green onion-flavoured Chaka. Truth be told, the vote was already decided before voting even started. Kellogg's had been mass-producing the extra chocolaty cereal for quite some time now. This whole voting ad campaign was to get people more engaged and hyped on the cereal. Kellogg's thought it would be an easy win. I mean, who would want to eat green onion cereal? Boy, were they surprised.
When voting first commenced, Cheki was in a big lead, but as the voting progressed, the tides began to turn as a giant army of trollers assembled on the front door of Kellogg's website. At first, it started slow, but as the days passed by and momentum picked up, Chaka overtook Cheki. Kellogg executives scrambled around to turn the vote back in their favour, but it was too little too late. Day by day, the gap just grew and grew until they knew there was no way they could win. So what did Kelloggs do? They cited voter fraud, restricted voting and announced Cheki as the winner to called it a day.
Of course, people were outraged, and a massive protest against Kellog's corporation ensued online. People called out Kellog's to release the actual voting results. Others called Cheki an illegitimate tyrant. This flame kept burning for 16 years, with #PrayForChex regularly appearing, and it seems to have worked.
In 2020, Kellogg's did something no one expected. They actually released the long-awaited green onion cereal as a limited edition cereal alongside an apology video on their youtube channel. This news became so big that on the day it was announced, it became the top trending topic on South Korean Social Media and sold out online within 2 days of it being released. People all over South Korea were overjoyed and cheered as Cheki was ousted, and the rightful ruler was put in his place.
So after reading this whole story, you are probably wondering, was the struggle worth it? Does it taste good? Lucky for you, I actually bought it and tasted it.
So what did I think? Absolutely horrible- the worst cereal I have ever tasted. It did taste better without milk but still tasted pretty bad. Simply don't buy it.
Ending on a different note, they ended up doing the same stunt, this time in Japan. Customers could either vote for a new Vanilla flavoured Cereal or a Wasabi Flavoured Cereal. Like last time, Kelloggs expected everyone to vote for the vanilla flavoured cereal, but I think we all know how it ended. It seems they still haven't learned their lesson...
It seems the long-predicted crackdown on Discord music bots have finally begun. Recently, YouTube sent a cease and desist order to the owner of the popular Groovy discord bot, which is mainly used to play music on discord voice chats. It is currently one of discord's most popular bots and 2nd most popular discord music bot out there with estimates suggesting that the bot is installed in over 16 million discord servers and has over 250 million users. However, with all this popularity, it seems to have caught the attention of YouTube. Google confirmed in a statement to The Verge, that it did indeed send the owner of Groovy, Nik Ammerlaan, a cease and desist letter. “We notified Groovy about violations of our Terms of Service, including modifying the service and using it for commercial purposes,” a YouTube spokesperson said The cease and desist order gave the owner of groovy 7 days to shut down the bot with legal repercussions if not followed. As a result, groovy will be shutting service on August 30th.
With the closure of Groovy, many are wondering if YouTube will be targeting other music bots. The next obvious target would be the discord bot Rythm which is currently the number 1 music bot on discord with more than 560 million users. For now, it seems operations over at Rythm is as usual with a Rhythm bot's co-owner stating "We don't currently plan to shut down," in a message to users. Personally, I would be surprised if Youtube took down Groovy but didn't take down Rythm but for now, it seems YouTube will allow Rythm to operate. The question is for how long will YouTube allow this?
With the opening of the Olympic Games over in Tokyo, Google has released a new RPG game, Doodle Champion Island Games, to celebrate the Olympics. In this game, you enter a new world as Lucky, a ninja cat, in which you move around exploring the island and also compete in different mini-games in her quest to become a sporting legend. There are also various side quests scattered around the island to complete and when you do, it will lead you down a fun and unique little story. I personally quite enjoyed it and thought it was a cute little game. Hopefully, Google decides to make more of these big games as they are quite enjoyable and at the same time, free! So yea if you got a bit of time on your hands, give this game a try.
As the academic year ends, we congratulate our graduates and hope only the best for them. Much like last year's graduation ceremony, only specific teachers, honourable guests and students were allowed in. Again, the ceremony was live-streamed to the graduates' family and students to view at home.
But some things don't change, Mr Depauw was the host of the ceremony, Mr Chadwick and the chairman gave a speech to the audience, followed by an inspiring story about Mr Chadwick and his daughter through her early University life.
The graduation ceremony was packed with action. Ms Ann was the MC and Ryan Chui gave a speech to the graduates. Mr Warburton showed a few brilliant videos made by the graduates who took Media Studies. The Year 10's, accompanied by Ms Kim performed a song to inspire graduates to make a difference; The Traveller also performed a song to remind graduates that goodbye isn't forever.
The year has been astonishing. As students, we have already adapted to the new limitations which made learning at home easier and a smoother process.
Finally, I would like to say to all those who are leaving KIS this year the best of luck in your new school, workplace or environment and come back and visit us, KIS.

Happy April 1st to everyone. Hopefully, you got pranked. I didn't :(. Anyways, you are probably wondering what I will be talking about on this fine day? How about a Reddit social experiment that lead to battles for territories against different subreddit eh? If that sounds like your stuff, click the button below. (Written by Oscar)
What is it?
“Rickrolling” is an internet prank that is more than 15 years old. It is so well known across social media that more than 7 out of 10 people would probably know what it is.
How does it work?
“How does it work?” Well, there are two sides involved consisting of the prankster and the victim. The prankster puts a link somewhere that would drag the person’s or the victim’s attention and if the link is activated, it will pop out both the video and the audio of a 1980s song called “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley. It is called “Rickroll” because the song is by Rick Astley and the word “roll” means to prank or trick somebody.
Examples
The first-ever “Rickroll” was made by a group of friends prank calling a radio station after a sports game. The group phoned the station and instead of speaking, they played the audio “Never Gonna Give You Up”. But there are many more ways to “Rickroll” or be “Rickrolled”. Examples include a fake preview for a highly hyped-up game, a phoney recording, a link sent in the comment section of a video, somewhere in school newspapers, etc. The list goes on, primarily because of how old it is and how it evolved.

The name "May the Forth" comes from the series of movies, Star Wars. In the movies, a common line among characters, "May the force be with you" would be a way to wish other characters the best of luck. The phrase sounds like the date May the forth, therefore fans have made 4th May "Star Wars day".

There are also other variations, like "Revenge of the 5th" which sounds like “Revenge of the Sith” for the following day.

Currently, the hot topic on Earth is if the IGCSE exams will be cancelled in 2021? This article will analyze the drawbacks when it comes to cancel the external examinations.
A vast majority of students think that the IGCSE exams should be cancelled in 2021 because it will increase their stress. Therefore, students will be forced to do the work that they have missed. This can decrease the student’s motivation.
On the other hand, if the exams are taking place, students may get infected from the virus because students are sitting closely to each other when the exams are happening.
Given these points, I think IGCSE exams in 2021 should not take place because it is absolutely ridiculous when the exam takes place. First of all, this can increase the infections of Covid 19. On the contrary, it is not fair that students in the UK don’t need to take the external exams. This is just my opinion. I am sure there will be different types of answers. There will be no right and wrong answers because this topic is very controversial. So, do you want to take the external exam?

To all students:
As the last day of school approaches and we see it around the corner, one of the events we would usually of had is a graduation ceremony where all secondary students would wish the 2020 graduates the best of luck in the future. But due to current events in the world, there were limitations to the number of people allowed in the ceremony. This unfortunately meant that only certain teachers, graduates and honorable guests were allowed to attend.
But nevertheless, the ceremony was live-streamed on Facebook for students, parents and staff to watch as well.
As always, Mr Chadwick gave his quality advice for the graduates, Mr DePauw hosted the ceremony and Ms Chan gave out the certificates and awards.
Last but not least, our head prefect, Omega, gave an inspiring speech to wrap up the school year for the graduating students.
This school year has not only been memorable, but also an interesting year which allowed students and teachers to adapt to changes which were necessary for our own learning.
Lastly, I would like to wish all graduates of 2020 the best of luck in the future and to look back at all the fantastic memories you made.

Procrastination means when one can not concentrate on doing one's work. Procrastination often hits when a person becomes lazy or gets distracted by something or someone.
At times like these, it is very easy to procrastinate because you're at home, there is no teacher there to tell you to do your work and focus and you have a computer where it is easy to get carried away.
A few ways to prevent procrastinating are planning what and when to do the work or setting a timer for an amount of time to prevent yourself from stacking the work. For more ways, visit Collegexpress.

Lunar New Year!
How do we celebrate?
Visit your family, eat with your family but most importantly, spend time with your family.
In legends there was a village that has monster, who only ate children. The monster attacks the village at a specific time. So the villagers move away from the village when the time comes. One day an old man arrived to the village, he said he know how to defeat the monster, nobody believed him so the villagers moved out. While the villagers move the old man put on red things all over the houses, and had red firecrackers ready. When the monster arrived to the village, it was very scared of all the red things that was on the houses, then the man lit the firecrackers to make loud noises, after all that the monster went running away from the village.
The red things on the houses were red lanterns, red couplets and paper cutouts which are still being used to decorate houses today. The red firecrackers can be still seen today, but Hong Kong does not allow firecrackers, instead there will be firework displays at harbors; in China, people uses both firecrackers and fireworks.
Now, the biggest migration of people happen during lunar new year with people rushing back to their home town to celebrate with their family. During the most anticipated event of the year, which is the new year diner, families do this while watching the New Year special on TV. For most people, this is the only holiday they each year.
As for why red pockets is given out during Chinese new year, Chinese people love the color red and regard red as the symbol of energy, happiness and good luck so sending red envelopes is a way to send good wishes and luck (as well as money). Wrapping lucky money in red envelopes is expected to bestow more happiness and blessings on the receivers. Hence, it is impolite to open a red envelope in front of the person who gives it to you.
Have a safe and happy Chinese New Year!

One of the highlights of the trip was definitely the sightseeing around the city of London. Touring around the city and looking at such famous and historical buildings and museums in real life was stunning. We spent hours exploring the Natural History Museum and Imperial War Museum.
The London Dungeon was everyone's favorite. While a few people where hiding behind the brave ones, it was the story line that amazed us and a few frightening moments might have blown us off our chair, but as the saying goes, "Time flies by when you're having fun."
And I'm sure that everyone had fun on the London Trip.

Philippines was definitely way better than my expectations. We had many exciting activities such as farming, beach clean ups and going to a Turtle conservation. But my favourite had to be surfing.
We did surfing almost everyday. The tides were perfect most of the time which made surfing so much more fun. Everyone got to stand up on the surfboard at least once which was great! There were a few accidents but everyone tried their best.
The memories I made at Philippines was amazing and they will definitely last a lifetime.

Japan was so much fun! We experienced everything Japan had to offer, the art was beautiful and we even did Kendo Drumming! One of the highlights would definitely be Team Lab Borderless, it is a mash up project between artists and scientist and when you put them together, you get one of the best museum in the world. The museum had massive led panels that would display amazing moving art and they even had an entire floor filled with trampolines with projectors so each time you would jump a small explosion would happen right beneath your feet.

In light of the Christmas spirit, here are some movies I recommend.
Home Alone
Authors Christmas
The Polar Express
A Christmas carol
From all these choices, I would say the best movie would be A Christmas Carol. The story starts with an old man who hates Christmas and shutting the Christmas spirit from his life but after the Christmas spirts shows his past, present, and future, he remembered his Christmas spirit again.
Another good classic is called Home Alone. If you haven't watched any of these movies then you are here for a treat. In this movie, you start with a family who is getting ready to go on vacation but after the family gets up late for the plane, they forget something very important. The toaster? No. The lights? No. Their kid? Yup. They forgot their kid, Kevin. You will be following kevin and his adventures while his parents scramble to get back home.

In preparation for the upcoming exams, let us go through the Art of Cramming again. Again, remember to not start studying the day before the exams . Give yourself some time to study.
All-Nighters are not encouraged. Especially if it is the night before the exam, sleep deprivation will hurt you cognitively. Concentration, reaction time and decision skills are weakened resulting in poor test performance.
Avoid excessive caffeine. Some side-effects are restlessness, rambling flow of thought and speech, gastrointestinal disturbance, nervousness, and muscle twitching. The rebound let-down and fatigue actually make you feel more tired.
There is a best time to sleep. You need a minimum of three hours and the best times to sleep are between 2AM and 6AM. Your body heat is lowest from 3-4AM, so you are drowsiest then and your memory retention is extremely poor. Sleep helps the mind absorb and retain the information you reviewed while studying.
Tips on staying alert while studying:
Break work up into small units; 40 minutes of study with 5 minute breaks. Movies or TV are poor choices for relaxants after studying. They put interference between the studying and the test and worsen memory retention. (Exercise or sleep are better options.)
When reading a lengthy or difficult assignment, take notes after each paragraph or section to keep your focus and concentration.
Washing your face or taking a short walk helps refresh and re-stimulate your mind.
Use every available daylight hour to study.
Avoid studying on your bed. Find a place with good light, little noise, and as little interruptions as possible.
Eat light foods (fruits and vegetables). Lean proteins are also important for the day of the test. Avoid donuts, coffee, and greasy, heavy foods.
Also remember to ask your teachers for help if you are stuck on anything.
