Reading Strategies to help your child read at home

The 3 most important things to think about when reading are:

• Does that make sense?
• Does that sound ok? Would we say it that way?
• Does it look right?

When your child is stuck on a word, you can say:

1. Try that again and think about the story.

2. Check your picture and think about what would make sense there.

3. Go back and reread and get ready to say the first sound.

4. Do you see something you know about that tricky word? (Ex. going)

5. Tell them the word– don’t turn your reading time into a reading lesson– Enjoy it ;)

6. DO NOT COVER THE PICTURES!!!
