English Language Development (ELD) work samples in California provide valuable insights into students' progress in acquiring English proficiency and accessing grade-level content. These samples can encompass various forms of student output and reflect their language learning journey.
Work samples demonstrate how students are progressing against California's ELD standards, such as their ability to engage in academic conversations, construct meaning from texts, and write various text types.
Instead of relying solely on test scores, work samples offer authentic evidence of what students understand and how they are applying their language skills in various contexts.

Our Fall Work Records window is officially open! Below you’ll find everything you need to complete this process accurately and on time. Please read all directions carefully—small errors can create extra work later.
🗓️ Due Date: Thursday, December 5, 2025
If you anticipate any challenges meeting this deadline, please reach out early so we can plan together.
Please reach out to Joe with any questions, or me.
🔹 Work Records Process & Directions
📄 Work Records Directions Site
This site walks you through the entire process step by step. Please review even if you’re a returning teacher, as there are updates from last term.
🔹 Fall Master Roster
📂 Fall HS Work Records Master Roster
Important Reminders:
Download a copy to your computer — do not edit directly online.
Use Excel (not Google Sheets) to ensure a smooth mail merge process.
The roster does not include middle schoolers taking HS courses (see directions for MS students below).
Withdrawn students who attended 10+ days are included and must have samples.
If you can’t locate a withdrawn student’s sample, check recovery options before contacting me.
If you find a student not on the roster, just add a line to your sheet.
If you believe someone is there that shouldn't be, please create a coversheet and put N/A and no work submitted just in case.
If you’ve been maintaining your own records, transfer your data into this sheet—it will save time when creating cover sheets.
🔹 Job Aids for Pulling Samples
I’ve updated all job aids and placed them in this shared folder:
Most of you will use the Canvas Learnosity Quiz or Canvas Assignment, but if you’re unsure which applies to your course, reach out for clarification.
🔹 File Naming & Saving
Follow the naming conventions listed on the master roster when saving your work samples. You can copy/paste names directly from the roster for consistency.
🔹 Creating Cover Sheets
When all samples are saved, download the correct templates from the Fall 25-26 Cover Sheet Templates Folder.
Complete your mail merge using the master roster.
Upload your merged cover sheet file (you do not need to separate by student).
📽️ Step-by-Step Guide to mail merging for cover sheets
Video of how to create a mail merge for cover sheets
Please contact me or Joe for help.
💡 Note: If your work sample isn’t part of a listed unit/lesson, type the title manually on your cover sheet (e.g., “History Assignment”).
🔹 Uploading Your Files
When finished, upload:
All work samples
All cover sheets to the HS Work Records Folder (25-26) by December 5th.
Auditors will not check Pathways this year, so everything must be in this folder.
🔹 Common Errors to Avoid
✅ Use numerical grades (e.g., 9/10) rather than letters only
✅ Ensure samples show all questions and student answers
✅ Double-check cover sheet grades match your gradebook
✅ Include ORN and credit recovery samples if applicable
✅ Verify signature dates are correct (no wrong years!)
