When we think about political connections around the world, we normally focus first on World War I. World War I was the first truly global conflict that drew in millions and led to the deaths of millions. After watching the video on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, use this resource and answer the following questions using the resources below.
How did the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand begin World War I?
Why were Alliances major causes of World War I?
Based on this event, what do you think is meant by the phrase “political globalization?”
World War I was termed the "War to End all Wars" or "The Great War." The number of casualties was in the millions, the most countries that had ever fought were fighting simultaneously, and the outcome of the war would change the course of human history. This conflict appeared to be the one that would resolve any and all issues affecting the global population.
Well, that wasn't exactly the case. The Treaty of Versailles chose to punish Germany and Austria-Hungary for World War I. The effects of this decision would bring about the most radical change in European power in the modern era.
As a result of Europe's decision to punish Germany, radical leaders emerged throughout Europe in an attempt to "restore world order" through fascism. The world was headed towards cataclysm as Adolph Hitler sought to reclaim Germany's lost territory from their conditions of surrender in WWI. Due to his annexations, European powers could no longer sit back and chose to declare war after Germany invaded Poland in 1939.
Even though the world believed it learned its lessons from WWI, it could not fathom that destruction and socioeconomic upheaval would result from another world war. World War II was the largest conflict in the history of the world.

Essential Question: How is global peace maintained?
There has not been a truly large-scale war since World War II ended in 1945. While there have been conflicts, many of them have been limited to one or two countries and are far lower in casualty numbers. There are many potential reasons why this is the case, and you are going to explore those reasons by understanding the role of the US military in the world.
Using all of the resources provided, you will create a Google Slides presentation that answers the question: how is global peace maintained?
