Writing in Kindergarten follows a developmental continuum. Students may begin with only drawing and scribbling to share their ideas. As they move along, they will begin to write randomly chosen letters or the first letter in the word they want to write. Later in the year, students begin to copy environmental print and use developmental spelling to express their ideas initially in words and then moving into sentences. It is important to encourage and celebrate all stages of writing.
