This Unit exposes students to stories with valuable lessons that can be applied to their own lives. Students will appreciate literary heritages and compare cultures through the use of folklore. Students will read traditional literature in order to identify similarities and differences across cultures and apply this analysis to a variety of tasks. Students will have an opportunity to use the common themes of traditional literature to better understand themselves.

The students will begin using the folktale Lon Po Po by Ed Young to analyze different versions of Little Red Riding Hood.
This tale from India illustrates how a child can outsmart an elder using mathematical skills. It is a good example of why learning math is important.
This tale from China illustrates a child in a moral dilemma. He is honest and fails but others are dishonest and succeed. However, all should have failed so his honesty is rewarded. This tale illustrates a clear moral and is worthy of retelling.
