What is the role of a school counselor?
School counselors are vital members of the educational team at GMS that supports academic achievement & intervention, personal and social development, and career exploration. Students can meet with counselors one-on-one, small groups, or can receive support in the classroom setting. School counselors are in the classrooms often teaching and supporting classroom teachers with bully prevention, social emotional learning, and other awareness and prevention programming.
Our conversations are CONFIDENTIAL. The only time counselors break confidentiality is when we need to keep you safe or you give us permission to share information to help you.

Question: Why would a student need to see a counselor?
Answer: Academic Counseling- A school counselor may assist students skills that could increase their academic performance. Some examples of academic supports that a counselor could help a student one-on-one or in a small group are organizational skills, time management skills, study skills, course selection, and course placement.
Personal & Social Counseling- A school counselor may assist students to develop skills to interact more effectively with others, identify personal values, talents and interests and transition into and out of middle school. The counselor will also provide support and assistance to students and families in crisis and can provide referrals to outside agencies for more extensive assistance including counseling, evaluations or treatment.
Career & Vocational Counseling- A school counselor may assist students in the early stages of career exploration.
How/When does a student meet with a counselor?
A student can stop into the student services office and/or email their counselor to schedule a time to meet that works best for the student. Typically, we try to meet first during non-curricular times of the day. For example, before school, after school or during the student's lunch. If the matter is urgent, a student can request a pass from their teacher to go to the student services office.
If their counselor is not available when they stop in, students can fill out a blue sheet in the student services office or schedule an appointment with our Student Services Secretary Mrs. Housholder.
How does a parent/guardian meet with a counselor?
Parents are welcome to meet or speak with a counselor, but we appreciate an appointment scheduled in advance. Parent/guardians can call or email your student's counselor directly to find a day and time to meet in person or talk over the phone. Parents/guardians can also schedule a time to meet with their student's counselor with the Student Services Secretary Mrs. Housholder.
