School-Appropriate Attire

• Costumes must comply with the school’s dress code (e.g., appropriate length, coverage, and footwear).

• No revealing, excessively tight, or transparent clothing.

• Avoid offensive language, symbols, or imagery on any costume or accessory.

Respect and Cultural Sensitivity

• Costumes should not demean or stereotype any group based on race, ethnicity, culture, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.

• Avoid costumes that mimic traditional or cultural dress (e.g., Native American headdresses, religious attire).

• Remember: Cultural appreciation ≠ cultural appropriation.

Safety First

• No weapons or weapon-like props (even plastic or toy versions).

• No masks or face coverings that obscure your full face — staff must be able to identify all students.

• Avoid costumes that could cause tripping hazards or restricted movement.

• No costumes that include liquids, fake blood, or messy materials.

School Climate and Learning

• Costumes must allow students to participate in normal classroom activities and not disrupt instruction.

• Inflatable costumes or those with sound effects are not permitted during class time.

• Costumes should be school-appropriate in tone—no themes of excessive violence.

Face Makeup and Hair

• Light, minimal face paint or makeup is allowed as long as the student’s face remains recognizable.

• Avoid full-face paint, masks, or colored contact lenses that change your identity.

• Hair color spray is allowed if non-permanent and does not create mess or fumes indoors.
