Safety is the top priority of the 'Iolani Surf program. We are fully committed to providing a safe environment for all surfers, both in practice and competition. Our program is dedicated to ensuring that every team member is well-equipped and prepared to handle the unique challenges of the ocean, prioritizing safety at every step.
To ensure a safe environment, we have implemented the following safety measures:
Junior Lifeguard Certification: All surfers and coaches have completed the Junior Lifeguard Certification training program provided by the North Shore Lifeguards Association and Na Kama Kai, giving them essential knowledge of ocean safety and rescue skills.
Ocean Safety and Rescue Training: Every surfer and coach has undergone comprehensive ocean safety and rescue training, including a swim test to assess water competency.
CPR/First Aid/AED Training: All surfers and coaches have completed training in CPR, first aid, and AED use, ensuring that everyone is prepared to respond to medical emergencies.
Experienced Coaching Staff: Our coaching staff brings over 100 years of combined ocean and surf experience, ensuring that our surfers are guided by seasoned professionals who are deeply familiar with ocean dynamics and safety.
HSA Water Patrol and Jet Ski Assists: During all contests, the Hawaii Surfing Association (HSA) provides water patrol and jet ski assistance to ensure rapid response to any situation. Beach lifeguards and coaches are also onsite and prepared to assist in case of emergencies.
Coach Supervision and Water Patrol: During all practice sessions, our coaches maintain a visual presence and provide water patrol, with a 1:4 coach-to-surfer ratio in the lineup to ensure close supervision and immediate assistance when necessary. 'Iolani Surf program also utilizes the Buddy System/Two-Person Rule at practices and ocean sessions where all surfers are paired up with a buddy ensuring that each individual is responsible for keeping an eye on their partner, promoting accountability and mutual safety in the water.
Emergency Preparedness: We carry a fully stocked first aid kit to all practices and contests to provide prompt care in case of injury or sudden medical issues. Portable AED coming soon...
Health and Emergency Information: We have access to each surfer's Magnus Health records and emergency contact information, allowing us to act swiftly and informed in the event of an emergency.
Head Coach Certification: Our head coach holds membership with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and has completed certification programs for Concussion Protocols, Heat Illness Prevention, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, and other sports-related safety training.
Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Membership: The surf team, including all surfers and coaches, is affiliated with the AAU, providing both sports accident and general liability insurance coverage for athletes and non-athletes alike.
By implementing these extensive safety measures, we strive to create a safe, fun, and competitive environment where our surfers can grow and thrive, both in and out of the water. Safety will always remain the cornerstone of our program, and we are committed to continually updating and improving our protocols to meet the highest standards of ocean safety.
All participants are required to complete and return the 'Iolani Surf Parent/Guardian Consent, Release, Assumption of Risk Liability Waiver Form and the Hawaii Surfing Association (HSA) Liability Waiver Form.
