ʻIolani School is proud to announce that four of its alumni surfers are making their mark at the collegiate level this season. Competing in National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) college surf competitions, these talented athletes continue to showcase the skills and spirit they developed during their years at ʻIolani School.
Representing their universities with pride, Castle Foti ʻ24 surfs men’s shortboard for San Diego State University, Sunny Kazama ʻ24 surfs women’s shortboard for the University of San Diegoʻs surf team, Ryder Kam ʻ25 competes in men’s longboard for San Diego State University and also Lei Crowley ʻ25 rides for San Diego State University.

The ʻIolani Surf Team Boys clinched an impressive 3rd place finish at the prestigious Honua Finals: World Cup of Interscholastic Surfing presented by Nike Swim, scoring a total of 2,931 points. Now in its second year, the elite-level event featured top high school teams from Japan, New Zealand, California, and all four counties across Hawai‘i including Oʻahu, Hawai‘i Island, Maui, and Kauaʻi. ʻIolani entered the contest as defending champions, following their standout victory at last year’s inaugural competition.
This year’s charge was led by 2025-26 team captains Ace Arizumi, Kaya Pestana, and Kalaʻi Gerell, whose consistent and strategic surfing anchored the team’s overall performance. Standout performances from Nigel Palalay, Cole Antonellis, and Tria Boland also helped propel ʻIolani onto the podium in a field packed with international and local talent. The result reaffirms ʻIolani's status as an international powerhouse in scholastic surfing, as they look ahead to future competitions.
Surfing Joins HHSAA’s Interscholastic Sports Lineup - New Championship to Feature Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions in Shortboard
(SPRING 2026)
HONOLULU – The Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) announced a landmark decision: surfing will officially become an interscholastic state championship sport beginning with the Spring 2026 season. This historic move marks a significant expansion of athletic opportunities for student-athletes and celebrates a sport deeply embedded in Hawaii’s culture.
HIGHLIGHTS
The inaugural HHSAA Surfing State Tournament will feature both boys’ and girls’ shortboard championships in Spring 2026 in Maui
The establishment of this new championship was supported by the recent enactment of Hawaii House Bill 133 (HB133) as Act 141, which appropriated crucial funding to the Hawaii Department of Education for the development of surfing as an interscholastic sport.
Surfing will become the 21st sport offered by the HHSAA (4th most in the entire country), further expanding the diverse athletic landscape for students.
“This is a monumental day for Hawaii’s student-athletes and the sport of surfing,” said HHSAA Executive Director Chris Chun. “Surfing is deeply rooted in our culture and way of life, and we extend our sincere gratitude to our legendary surfers who have paved the way for this sport in Hawaii and around the world. We are thrilled to offer this incredible opportunity to high school students statewide, allowing them to compete for a state title in a sport they are passionate about. We look forward to crowning our first state champions in 2026.”

OAHU WATER QUALITY REPORT
Caution! High Bacteria Count at Bowls, Point Panic/Kewalos, Magic Island Canoe Launch
(February 2023)
'Iolani Surfers & Coaches,
Caution! The water quality map shows higher than normal levels of bacteria (enterococcus) at Bowls, Kewalos, and Magic Island Canoe Launch Area and medium levels at Blackpoint & Cromwells. The recorded "high" level readings can be attributed to recent rain and stormwater runoff. If you frequently surf these spots please consider waiting 72 hours after hard rain events to avoid gastrointestinal illness, ear & nasal infections, and skin rashes. If you can not avoid surfing these spots after rain, please do not ingest water, rinse off/shower completely, flush nasal passages with warm water, and dry ear cavities after your sessions.
NOTE: When enterococcus is present in the water it suggests that fecal contamination may have occurred and other pathogens, viruses, or bacteria may be present in the water that can cause sickness. Enterococcus is therefore measured to indicate the risk of getting sick from other illness-causing pollutants in the water.
