1. Whats in the box
Inside the Spylamp2 box you should find :
- The bicycle light casing containing the GPS tracker
- Two seatpost clamps (large and small sizes)
- 2 Torx keys
- USB cable
- SIM Card
- Rubber spacer
- 2 Lens screws
2. Attaching the Spylamp to your bicycle
Inside the box are two seatpost clamps. The smaller clamp will fit standard road-bike 27.2 mm seatposts. For larger seatposts (mountain bike) you can use the larger seatpost clamp and cut the rubber spacer as required to ensure a tight fit. It is best to affix the Spylamp to your seatpost tube with the red button facing down, and use the "torx" security screw provided to secure the spylamp to your seatpost tube.
3. Charging your Spylamp
Spylamp comes with a USB cable. Plug this into a phone charger or computer to charge your Spylamp. (Phone chargers will charge faster, computer USB outlets do not deliver much power). Approximately 3 hours should be sufficient but overnight is best.
4. Using your Spylamp for the first time
Please make yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee and read through the steps below carefully before starting to configure your Spylamp tracker!
5. Configuring/Setting up the SIM
Please note that the set up instructions vary depending on whether you are using the SIM card supplied with your Spylamp or if you are using a SIM that you have sourced yourself. If the latter, please choose the other instructions at Spylamp2 - Third Party Sim
You can set up the tracker using either the www.spybike.com tracking page or by download the spybike app (IOS and Android app stores)
- Open the app/website and choose [Register] to create a new account and log in
- Remove the SIM card out of its card and take a note of the long ICCID number written on the SIM (see image above)
- Go the the [Trackers] tab of the the Spybike tracking portal or the [Settings] tab on the Spybike mobile app
- Click [Add Auto] on the website or [Add] -> [Add Wizard] on the mobile app
- Enter the ICCID number from the SIM card (step 2) and press [NEXT>>]
- Reset the tracker by pressing the small gold ‘reset’ button under the lens
- Wait a few minutes for the tracker to restart
- Go to the [Trackers] page and click “refresh”. You should see your Spylamp appear there
- The SIM card will enable and 1 month’s free credit will automatically be added to your account for use with your Spylamp.
- Select the tracker and click ‘Edit’. You can now enter your email address. You can enter your phone number optionally if you want the tracker to send you SMS. We recommend just using email and mobile app push messaging since these are free and just as fast as SMS on a modern phone.
- If you do want to enter your number you need to do it in the international format including your country code. eg. if your mobile number was 0123456789 and your country code is +34, then enter your number as +34123456790.
6. Checking your Spylamp can connect to the network
Now we need to check that Steps 1-9 above have resulted in your Spylamp being correctly configured.
- Reset the Spylamp, by pressing the small gold button under the red lens cover.
- A small green network indicator light will come on. Wait 90 seconds
If the light goes off then the Spylamp has connected to the network successfully, and is ready to be used. Please go the ‘Configuring/testing’ section of this manual for a step by step guide how to how test and familiarize yourself with the tracking functions.
If the light starts to flash regularly at 4 second intervals then the Spylamp could not connect. If this happens, please repeat above steps. If the problem persists, this indicates Spylamp cannot connect to the mobile network where you are. Please try moving to a different location.
7. Obtaining the location of your Spylamp.
- Go outside and turn the Spylamp's light on and off (flash the light on and off using the red button). This will cause the tracker to ‘wake up’ and connect to the mobile network so that it is active.
- Wait 30 seconds for it to connect to the GSM network.
- On the tracking page, click [Configure] and send a command to the Spylamp. Send the command "whereareyou" (Use the commands tab on the mobile app if you are using the Spybike SIM)
- Spylamp will send back a reply message, acknowledging your request and then attempt to obtain a GPS lock and return its coordinates. This will take between 15 secs and 5 mins depending on view of sky and number of satellites visible.
- If your Spylamp obtains a GPS lock, it will send a message with its latitude and longitude, which you can enter into google maps, and also a hyperlink which you can click through on a smart phone to take you directly to your Spylamp’s position.
- If the tracker cannot obtain a GPS lock then it will return a less accurate location based on GSM triangulation. Many things can affect the ability to obtain a GPS lock but most important is the view of the sky. The tracker will work inside small buildings but dense materials like brick or steel will affect performance. In this case you will be sent a link that gives the position based upon the nearby mobile phone towers. This is only accurate to within a few hundred meters but will give you an indication of where the tracker is until it can obtain a GPS lock.
- From the [Configure] page, send the command settings It will respond with a text showing some of its common configuration settings. Among these are its unique IMEI code (device ID). Note this number down.
- Now send the tracker the command upload.
- The tracker will respond and then obtain its GPS location and upload it to www.spybike.com.
- Go to the “Tracking” page at spybike.com and select your tracker. You will see your tracker on the map!
*NB : Please note that during the normal operation of the tracker you do not need to send it messages. These setup messages is just used for testing and configuration during this initial setup process. All you should need to do for daily operation is arm and disarm the tracker using the on/off button
Now you have successfully configured your Spylamp, you can now learn more about Spylamp’s other functions.
8. Controlling your Spylamp
There are 2 ways to control your Spylamp:
- Directly using the hardware (resetting, on/off arming and disarming only)
- Remotely using the web tracking platform at Spybike.com.
On the [Tracking] page you can send commands to your tracker. These are SMS messages that are sent from our server to Spylamp that are useful during setup and to arm/disarm remotely.
9. Arming Spylamp’s Vibration sensor
- When you park your bicycle you need to activate Spylamp’s vibration sensor so that you are notified if someone touches it. You can do this by:
- Holding down the on/off button at the back of the tracker for 5 seconds.
- Spylamp’s light will quickly flicker for 1 second to indicate the tracker is now being armed.
- Wait 30 seconds, and the vibration sensor is now activated.
- When the Spylamp is ‘armed’, prolonged motion will cause it to wake up, send you an an SMS message/email to the phone/mobile push notification that you chose in Section 5 of the configuration process . When ‘armed’ and the Spylamp detects movement, it will begin uploading its location to the “Tracking” section at www.spybike.com at regular intervals. It will do this until 5 minutes after the vibrations stop.
- What if you park your bike and forget to arm your Spylamp? Don’t worry, you can also activate the vibration sensor remotely - see the section below for details.
10. Disarming Spylamp’s Vibration sensor
Make sure you remember to disarm your Spylamp when you return to your bicycle or you will set the vibration sensors off when you start to ride!
- Hold down the on/off button at the back of the tracker for 5 seconds.
- Spylamp’s light will give 5 long steady pulses to indicate the vibration sensor is now being disarmed.
- Wait 30 seconds, and the vibration sensor is now deactivated.
You can also disarm remotely - see section below.
11. Resetting the Tracker
There is a small gold flat reset button under the lens. Pressing this will reboot the tracker and force it to re-connect to the network. It will also cause the tracker to show the green connection LED light so that you can check your network connection.
12. Controlling your Spylamp Remotely
During the day to day use of your Spylamp, you will not need to to send commands to your Spylamp.
Just arm and disarm it using the on/off button (holding down for 5 seconds)
However occasionally you may need to change settings. You can do this by going to the [Trackers] page on spybike.com by clicking the [Configuration] tab or by using the mobile app
It is important to note from the outset that to save battery life, Spylamp is not normally connected to the mobile network
Spylamp will not receive your SMS messages immediately unless you ‘wake it up’ by turning the light on and off (red button) or by pressing the gold reset button.
If you are not physically with your Spylamp, please note that Spylamp periodically ‘wakes up’ every 6 hours and will check to see if it has received any commands.
If no commands have been received, it will stay awake for 5 minutes and then it go back to ‘sleep’ to conserve battery life. This awake period is extended by 5 minutes every time a command is received. You can customize all these time periods by sending commands to your Spylamp but we recommend the defaults.
13. Arming/Disarming remotely
You can click on the [Configuration] tab and click [Arm]. This means that if the worst happens, and your bicycle got stolen and you forgot to activate your Spylamp, you are still able activate it and find its location. You should note though that this is not as reliable as using the hardware directly to arm because SMS messages may be delayed or lost. Also they will not be received until the next wake up (trackers wakes every 6 hours to check for messages)
14. Common commands
whereareyou - Send me the current GPS location
settings - Send you common settings as stored in tracker memory
gprssettings - Send you common network settings as stored in tracker memory (APN, User etc)
reset - Reset to factory settings.
setwakeup - How often should the device wake. i.e. setwakeup 6 hours
setwaketime - How long the tracker stays connected after waking setwaketime 5 mins
setstatus - How often the tracker should 'check in'. i.e. setstatus 1 days
checkbattery - How much charge does the battery have left
arm/disarm - Turn the vibration sensor on or off
upload - Upload the GPS location once to the website
UPPER or lower case is not important but ensure there are no leading or trailing spaces
The setwakeup, setwaketime and setstatus messages are denominated in seconds, minutes, hours or days. e.g. setwakeup 6 hours, setwaketime 5 minutes, setstatus 7 days (or you can abbreviate setwakeup 6 h, setwaketime 5 m, setstatus 7 d).
We have listed all the commands (including some less common commands) at the end of this manual in the Appendix.
15. If the tracker is stolen
If your bicycle is stolen and the tracker was armed, you will receive a message to your phone as soon as vibrations are detected (if you have not activated the vibration sensor, you should go to the configuration page and click the [Arm] button).
The Spylamp will then obtain a GPS lock and begin uploading its location to the online tracking service. By default, it will upload its location every 20 seconds.
You can look on the website and you will see a red line leading from where your bicycle was stolen to where it was taken to.
The Spylamp will continue to upload its location until 5 minutes after vibrations have stopped. So, if your thief gets home and puts the bicycle in the garage, 5 minutes later, it will then go back to sleep.
If the thief then rides your bike again tomorrow, you will receive another text, notifying you that it is on the move and then it will start tracking again. This will continue each time the thief uses your bike.
This is useful in case your bicycle is taken to a block of flats or placed somewhere where it cannot get a clear GPS signal and you are unable to pinpoint exactly where it is. The next time they ride your bike, you are notified straight away and you will be able to see where they go.
While the bike is not moving (asleep) it will enter low power mode and can last like this for weeks or months depending on the battery remaining.
If you send the tracker a SMS while it is asleep, it will respond to the text the next time it wakes or the next time the thief moves the bike or uses the bike light.
*NB : The tracker is completely disconnected from the mobile network until it wakes up.
16. Responding to messages
SMS text messages (sent via the website) are sometimes not responded to straight away for a number of reasons :
- The Spylamp will respond to SMS messages (sent via the [configuration] page) if it is connected to the network.
- Using the default settings, the Spylamp will stay connected to the network for 5 mins after it wakes up (either from timer, button press or vibration sensor). It will respond to SMS messages during this time but afterwards will go back to sleep and disconnect from the network. It does this to maximize the battery.
- If an SMS message is sent to the tracker while it is not connected to the network then it should receive this message the next time it connects. How this occurs is dependent on your local network provider. Most send through missed SMS messages within 30 seconds of connecting but sometimes it can takes several minutes. This varies between networks and current network load.
- Sometimes SMS messages are not delivered immediately by the networks. This may be due to network congestion. Occasionally it can be hours before they arrive, although this is unusual. If in doubt, just send the message again.
*NB an easy way to ensure the tracker is connected when you want to change its configuration is to switch the light on and off. Wait 30 seconds to ensure that the tracker has connected to the network and then send it a SMS. When the message arrives the small green LED light will blink once.
Always check you have credit on your SIM card
17. Flashing the light
You can send the SMS command flash to flash the light. This may be useful to test the tracker and even to find it in the dark. It is also a good way to check if the Spylamp is receiving your SMS even if it is not replying (ie you have no credit on your SIM card)
18. Battery
The tracker contains a lithium ion battery. This battery, when fully charged, should be enough to run the tracker for months. It is best to keep it well charged.
There are a number of factors which affect battery life, including how much you use the light, the network signal strength and the wakeup interval. See the SpyLamp section on the website setup page for more details.
You can see how much battery is left with the command checkbattery
- The tracker will stop working at 3.35 volts
- You will receive a low voltage warning at 3.5 volts
- Over 4 volts represents a full charge
If the battery is below 3.35 v and you attempt to switch the light on, the light will flicker and switch back off. It is time to charge the battery. Please use the charger provided.

19. Using the tracker as a light
You can use the tracker as a light like a normal bike light. Please note that will use more battery. You can check your battery level online on the tracking page (Choose battery view) or by sending the SMS checkbattery to your Spylamp.
20. Downloading new software
The tracker can download new software from the online web server. This is useful for upgrading the tracker, fixing issues and making enhancements.
To download the latest version, send the text download
To download a specific version, send the text like download 1.3.0.1 (the version you want)
You can also download new software using the reset button and the light button.
- Hold the light button down.
- Now click the reset button (gold button under the cover) and release while keeping the light button down.
- Keep the light button down for a further 5 seconds until the tracker flashes.
- It will now start downloading.
Downloading takes approximately 5 minutes during which time the light will flicker and flash to indicate it is working. After it has finished, send the text settings to check the version that is running.

setsensitivity - (3-30). 3 = highest sensitivity, 30 = lowest. Default = 6 ie setsensitivity 6
GPRS tracking commands (these are commands relating to your tracker connecting to the network)
setgprsinterval - Set the time in between tracking positions. ie setgprsinterval 20 seconds
download - Download a new version of firmware to the tracker ie download latest
These instructions are valid for the tracker at the time of writing. You can download new versions of software to your tracker from time to time when they are released. Because of this, specific functions may be added or changed.
