Our Community Action Goal was to raise awareness, especially among little kids, but it is for everyone.
The action we took to achieve this goal was to start working on a garden next to our school and make some activities for some children in a primary school in our neighborhood.
The impact our project had on our community was being part of the garden next to our school and teaching kids everything that we have learned this year about food security and other food issues.
We know this because we will keep working in the garden next year, and because after the activities we asked the kids if they had learned something and they said that they learned a lot of things they didn’t know about food issues and food security.
We can continue working on this issue by keeping students and volunteers to take care of the garden, and in summer that students, their families and summer camps that will be at school take care of the garden and water the plants. Also we explained to the next year students how they will have to take care of the garden, and they will continue with our work.
We created this site where you can see what we have done in Global Schoolars this year and we have included our community action activities. You will find it below.
Can you give us feedback to help us work on this issue in the future?
2nd D class
First of all, we brainstormed some ideas to raise awareness in the project. We thank about doing some games, making a presentation, planting some plants, and things like that.
We decided to raise awareness among students from fourth grade of primary education.
Our classmate wrote an email to the principal of the school to ask him if we could go and do the final project activities. They agreed to do this project, and on 31st of May we went to Diputació school.
We went to the school's playground, and we divided students in five groups:
GAME 1: Memory game
By: Biel, Alejandro, Ruben, Iqra and Jana.
Our group made a memory game about the things we learned in Global Scholars like km0, sustainability and accessibility. We made this memory with cardboard and images from Google. We printed them, and then we plasticized everything and cut them in rectangle forms. When we went to Diputacio school, first we took a place which had a little table with enough space to put all the cards on the table. Then, when the group of kids came, we explained to them how the game worked. First we explained the definitions of the words; like reuse or km0, and once they understood we started playing the game. First they turned up a red card and a white card, the red was for the images and the white ones for the descriptions. If the description was the one that went with the image, then the kid won a point, and he or she kept playing the game. When they lost, we changed to the next kid that was next to him.
GAME 2: MANUAL KAHOOT
By: Alba, Patri, Lele, Lucas J and John:.
The game we created was a manual Kahoot. We took cards of different colours to make the questions and answers. We made a purple card with the question, and on the other cards of different colours we put the answers, there were four answers with little drawings, and there were also true or false questions.
There were questions about food security
We made a pyramid food game. We started by cutting the cardboard from the pyramid, then we chose the foods we would put in the food pyramid. We printed and plasticized the food. And we put the names. Then we put the colours for each group on the pyramid. And we glued the velcro.
On the 31st of May we went to the Diputació school to play games for the boys and girls of a 4th grade class. In this game they had to separate into two lines. The first had to take one of the ingredients, run away, and hook it where they thought it was going. When all the ingredients had been hooked, we counted the points that each group had, and the group with the most points would be the winner.
Then all together they would assemble the pyramid correctly.
“Oca” Climate Change
We made a game about Climate change, a game called “Oca” (goose game). On cardboard, we draw some squares with some questions inside. We also made cards with curiosities about our topic. The kids had to throw a dice and move the positions in the table. First we thought that the game was gonna be collaborative, but then we thought that the game would be funnier with two teams. Just one team could win but everyone answered the questions. We had so much fun and we think that the kids did too.
Each of the players has to choose a number, then one person has to stand in the middle of the field where the game is going to be played and say one of the numbers. The person who gets called by their number has to take the scarf and take it to their starting point or base. If you catch the person who has the scarf before they get to their base you have also won. One of the things we changed was, when someone reached their base with the scarf, we asked them one questions about the food security. To score a point you had to answer the question correctly, if you didn't get it right it was the other team's turn to answer. The children liked a lot the game because they liked the part of doing a game and running around, we think they also learned about food security and food waste.
