Tinkering PERIODIC TABLE

This year, we do an activity about the periodic table, first we do groups of three persons, and we were doing the element of the periodic table with recyclable material.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this project are:

  • To work cooperatively

  • To promote creativity

  • To learn in a different and innovtive way the periodic table of elements

HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO THE ACTIVITY

The activity consists of making a periodic table with recycled materials. We will work in groups. Every group may create 3 different elements.

The object/element must be done in a piece of foam paper. When you finish it, take a picture.

After that, write the symbol and the atomic number on the piece of foam.

Spain will do the complete periòdic table (there are 69 students). The rest of schools will do only the first 36 elements (there are about 25 pupils per class).

When you finish, join all the pieces of foam. You have to follow the periodic table order.

The result must be similar to the table on the photo

MATERIALS

The materials that we need to make the tinkering of the periodic table may be everyday objects containing one or more elements of the periodic table. recycliEd material and our imagination to create an original tinkering project is a must. For example we can use:

WHEN TINKERING IS DONE

Once your periodic table is done, students send pictures of their periodic table ONLY of the objects used for each purpose, without the information about the symbols and the atomic nomber of the element. The chosen school may guess the name of the element based on the objects.

The pictures with the name information of each element must be sent too to help the teachers to resolve the periodic table because it's very difficult to solve the table witouht that information.

To check it, a video call will be done with the students of the selected school .

Proposal to exchange material among Erasmus project participants:

Due to Spain has more groups than the rest of the participants,

Spain must send the pictures to Poland, Portugal and Romania.

Portugal will send his pictures to Spain.

Poland will send his pictures to Spain

Romania will send his pictures to Serbia

Serbia will send his pictures to Spain

Assessment

Teachers and students from Spain answered an assessment questionnaire after doing the activity.

The questions to the students were the following:

From 1 to 4 value your work in the project ; Have all the students done the same amount of work? Justify your answer ; How much do you like the project? ; What did you like most about it? What would you change about the project and why?

82,5% of the students thought that the activity was Good (43,9%) or Very Good (38,6%).

The task that the majory of the students liked more was the construction of the model of each element.

Teachers cosidered that the activity was good and the students worked good. The activity must be improved with more explanations and improving the cooperation between the schools.
