In Unit 3, students research food security in their city. They consider how local agriculture can improve food security for a city’s residents.
They learn about food security issues and how they might impact people differently. They think about solutions and innovations that can help all people be food-secure as cities grow and change.
For the digital project, students share their research in a news report where they discuss the current state of food security in their city and make suggestions for its future.
Enduring Understandings:
The foods that people grow and produce vary across geographies.
Food-secure cities help all people access nutritious food.
Communities can take action to build food-secure cities.
We started by researching and sharing a food that is grown or produced locally and a recipe that uses this food. Students began to recognize that their personal food experiences and those of their community are one part of the larger picture of their city’s food system.
Then, we introduced the concept of equity into students’ research as they consider how and why people might experience food security differently, even within the same city. After analyzing their community’s access to nutritious foods in Unit 2, they begin to learn about issues that might exist outside their own neighbourhood. They analyzed a food security issue and consider how it might impact people in different ways. They began to think about what actions might best address the issue in preparation for their research into food security solutions and innovations.
They analyzed and commented 2 articles from the news, the first one about an issue: "Inseguretat alimentaria" and the second one about a solution: "Hermanas Quílez". Both articles are local and the information is from Tarragona.
To create the DIGITAL PROJECT, they discussed local agriculture as well as the food security issues people face in their city and the solutions and innovations people have found to address them. They touched on issues of equity and consider what else can be done to make their city’s food system more sustainable for all who live there, both now and in the future. They followed the steps of the design process to share their research in a clear and informative news report for an audience of their international peers.
