In this project we learned how to mix and master a song. We were given the stems to the bass, drums, guitar, keys, vocals and horns. I used compressors on the drums and the bass to make the sound more present in the mix. The keys were recorded right into the board so they were very hot. I used a limiter to change the output of the keys so they can fall into the mix. I really enjoy the older rougher style of the blues and wanted to recreate that with this song. I used amps to try and mimic an old Marshall stack.
I learned how to mix and what components to put on each track to create a mix. I also learned how to record my guitar into Ableton and set it up so I can play with different effects.
In this project we learned about Sampling, We learned that you can take a piece of music you like and sample it and put it in your own music as long as you give the creator proper credit. I was very inspired by the Native Tongues specifically the Pharcyde. They used lots of shout outs in their music.
I made this song using Ableton built in samples and used shoutout from movies. I chpped up and used shoutouts from Dazed and Confused and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
In this project I was tasked with creating 3 pieces of music to go along with a video. I was inspired by the work of Hanz Zimmer and all the work he has done for movies. I was inspired by his work in the movie inception and it lead me to creating this music.
The music is a 4 chord pattern, just like Hanz Zimmer used, with arpeggiated chords and a melody over it. It has a sort of eerie effect desined to encapsulate the listener in the music in the same way pink floyed did. I then added a drum beat to make the music have some rythym. When the music wasz done I moved it into a video editing software and used fades to go along with the video.
In this Project I started to really use the ableton push. I Started with the bass line and then created a beat to go along with it. Then I added some arpeggio chords for the melody.
With this project I wanted it to feel like you were flipping through the radio and then all of a sudden your favorite song comes on through the static. Because I wanted it to feel like an older song I have vinyl cracks and pops in the background of the entire song. I wanted to make it feel grainy and not perfect.
I learned a lot during this project. I learned how to use ableton and expanded on previous ideas that I couldn't do in Bandlab. I learned how to pan better and use the ableton push to make beats.
I made this beat by chopping up a sample of a speech given by a Brittish leader declaring war on Germany. Then I reversed it and looped it and put a trap beat behind it.
Fix the Mix
I started off by soloing all the tracks an listening to them. I then decided what I liked and didn't like and removed a few tracks. I didn't like how the piano sounded and how the synth sounded so I changed the instrument and added some reverb. I then panned everything and added automation. I wanted to make this song more mine so I added a nice bluesy guitar riff and it sounded nice with the chords and piano part.
I learned a lot about panning and timing in this project. When to put the drum fill and how to automate it so it will lead into the drum. I also learned when to add tracks in and when to delete them to ensure a solid mix.
Pop Shuv It
I started by listening to all the loops all together and then by themselves. I realized that the lead guiatar needed to be in the front so I left that pan pot in the middle and Boosted the High mid. I then moved the drums and bass to the left and boosted the low end. I put the rythm guitar and the arpeggio on the right and then played 3 seperated guitar solos and added amplifiers.
I learned about panning and moving sounds around by mixing. I also learned how to use equalizers and how to use pan pots and volume to move sound around. I figured out how to use the amplifiers and added those to all the guitars. Finally I learned how to use the fuzz and distortion pedals in bandlab.
