Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic easter break and are now rejuvenated and eager to continue their exciting year in Year Three . We are thrilled to present the Year 3 curriculum newsletter for the summer term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this upcoming period. You will also see the words that will be used for the spelling assessments this half term.
In English, we will be having fun exploring 'The Accidental Prime Minster' and imagining what we would do if we were the prime Minster! We will be exploring persuasive language and creating our own manifestos alongside learning about inspiring leaders around the world. In reading, we will continue to work on our fluency and practice the reading strategies of inference, making links and retrieving key facts.
In Maths, we will be learning about telling the time, including digital and analogue clocks. We will also apply this to maths problems such as everyday situations. We will also be exploring addition and subtraction, moving on to more formal written methods in line with our calculation policy. During week 2, we will be moving onto the topic of 'time' - learning how to tell the time to the nearest minute.
This half term's science topic is 'light and shadow' where we will observe how light interacts with different objects and we investigate to discover how shadows are formed and changes throughout the day, as well as testing how light reflects from different surfaces.
In Geography this half term, we will be learning about Ancient Egypt, in particular making comparisons between the River Nile and the River Thames - which was our learning last half term. We will be introduced to the geographical features of the River Nile and the climate in Egypt.
The children will be exploring how digital devices have changed the way we work. From this, we will learn about the physical components of a network, input/output devices and how digital devices can be connected.
This half term in R.E, we will be exploring the importance of the various religious festivals in Judaism. We will learn how Moses helped the Israeli people to flee from slavery in Egypt and then received the Ten Commandments which formed Jewish law as well as passover being celebrated because of the Jewish people being freed from slavery. We will then answer the question: "How do Jewish people celebrate their holidays?"
This year, PE will be split into two sessions per week to keep in line with the DfE guidance of 90 minutes of PE per week. We will be applying striking and fielding skills such as rounders as well as net and wall games such as tennis.
In DT we wil be making bridges to cross the River Nile, which links to our Eygptian studies. We will also be making paper mache sculptures about Eygyptian queens.
The children will be using Charanga to consider how music can help us resolve friendship issues as well as making peace with any conflicts.
In French, we will be learning instructions and items around the classroom as well as colours.
In RHE, we will be learning about the role we can take in an emergency situation, such as how to help someone who has been bitten or stung. We will then continue our learning of how to be safe online by identifying the dangers and how to act appropriately to these dangers.
