Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic summer break and are now rejuvenated and eager to embark on another exciting year of learning. We are thrilled to present the Year 4 curriculum newsletter for the autumn term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this first half of the term.
This half term in English, we will be reading 'The Adventures of Odysseus' by Hugh Lupton. We will be using its exciting vocabulary and mystical stories to create our own myth.
In Maths, the children will begin the year focusing on place value. The children will looking at numbers greater than 1000, representing them in different ways and then rounding them to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
In Science this half term, our topic is ‘States of Matter’. The children will begin by exploring the difference between the particles in solids, liquids and gases using drama and movement. They will deepen their ‘working scientifically’ skills to carry out an investigation, changing the states of different familiar objects. They will then record their results and make conclusions based on what they have discovered. The children will also explore the different stages of the water cycle and will use scientific vocabulary to describe this.
This half term the children will dive into the world of Ancient Greece. Here, they will learn about the impact of a hierarchy on a civilisation, how the Greek empire ruled as far as Afghanistan and India and reflecting on the lagacy the Greek empire has left in today's society.
In Computing, year 4 will be looking into how network devices make up the internet. They will learn this through outlining how websites can be shared via the World Wide Web (WWW), describing how content can be added and accessed on the World Wide Web & evaluating the consequences of unreliable content
RE learning will focus on the places of worship within Christianity. Children will discuss the question, 'Why are churches important to Christians?' by learning about how places of worship create a sense of belonging. The children will also explore Christian teachings such as the ten commandments. By the end of the half term, the children will have visited a local Christian place of worship.
This year, PE will be split into two sessions per week to keep in line with the DfE guidance of 90 minutes of PE per week. Year 4 will have an indoor session with coach Stephanie learning gymnastics and an outdoor session of invasion games within a football context.
This half term the children will be linking their history learning by creating clay sculptures reminiscent of Ancient Greece. The sculptures will be inspired by the works of Grayson Perry.
This half term the children will be looking at the song Mamma Mia and practising the song.
In French, the children will be looking at themselves in the world. They will be describing themselves and having conversations.
Within RSHE, the children will be looking at relationships. The children will be discussing different relationships and delve into conversations about bullying and stereotypes.
