Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic summer break and are now rejuvenated and eager to embark on another exciting year of learning. We are thrilled to present the Year 4 curriculum newsletter for the autumn term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this first half of the term.
In English, we will be reading 'The Adventures of Odysseus' by Hugh Lupton. Throughout the journey children will have the opportunity to analyse the author's word choice and generate dialogue between characters. They will use this to support them in creating their own sequel to follow on from the core text.
In Maths, the children will begin the year focusing on place value. The children will look at numbers greater than 1000, representing them in different ways and then rounding them to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. We will then be moving on to addition and subtraction of 4 digit numbers using the column method and place value grids.
In Science this half term, our topic is ‘States of Matter’. The children will begin by exploring the difference between the particles in solids, liquids and gases using drama and movement. They will deepen their ‘working scientifically’ skills to carry out an investigation, changing the states of different familiar objects. They will then record their results and make conclusions based on what they have discovered. The children will also explore the different stages of the water cycle and will use scientific vocabulary to describe this.
This half term the children will dive into the world of Ancient Greece. They will be learning about the significance of the Olympics and important events throughout within Ancient Greece. They will also be looking at the impact of hierarchy and democracy on a civilisation. The class will have the opportunity to compare Ancient Greece to the modern day.
In Computing, year 4 will be looking into how network devices make up the internet. They will learn this through outlining how websites can be shared via the World Wide Web (WWW), describing how content can be added and accessed on the World Wide Web & evaluating the consequences of unreliable content
This half term, we will be learning about how different religions worship and show adoration. The children will identify key elements of worship across different religions before identifying similarities and differences.
In PE, Year 4 will have indoor sessions focusing on gymnastics where they will practice skills including balancing, jumping and travelling. They will also be learning about invasion games within a football context where they will learn skills such as passing to a partner, dribbling and combining these skills.
In Art, children will be combining their knowledge of Ancient Greece and creating clay sculptures. These sculptures will be inspired by the works of Grayson Perry. They will explore his work before creating their own design. This journey offers children an opportunity to experiment with clay and use techniques such as scoring, pinching and coiling to create their vases.
This half term, Year 4 will be looking at how music is structured. They will be looking at how repeating or changing a section of music can change the structure. The children will be encouraged to spot patterns within a range of songs.
In French, the children will be looking at how they can describe themselves. They will be learning how to introduce themselves and describe where they live. They will practice by asking and answering questions with a partner.
Within RHE, the children will be looking at relationships. The children will share how they show respect and act with manners within different scenarios. The children will also be discussing different relationships and delving into conversations about bullying and stereotypes.
