Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic summer break and are now rejuvenated and eager to embark on another exciting year of learning. We are thrilled to present the Year 1 curriculum newsletter for the autumn term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this first half of the term.
This half term we will be inspired by 'Beegu', where we will be writing a guide to be a good friend and a guide for a new arrival at our school. We will be using descriptive language in our writing and we will hot seat Beegu and answer questions in role.
The children will begin the half term exploring place value and numbers up to 20. We will be sorting objects in a variety of ways and counting amounts in a group through the use of pictorial and abstract representations. We will also be counting forwards and backwards by 1 using 100 squares and number lines.
Materials
In Science this half term we are learning about materials and their properties. We will do this by experimenting with different materials to test their strength and absorbency. We will explore this through practical lessons, by testing which material would be the best for Beegu's spaceship.
We will be exploring our local area. identifying human and geographical features of the area around where we live. We will then be looking at maps and identifying where we live and the country that we live in. We will be making comparisons between the countries within the United Kingdom.
In Computing, we will be identifying what online safety is and discussing it in class. We will be identifying the different parts of a computer that we will use to complete different activities.
In RE, we will be learning about what it means to belong. We will explore the importance of belonging and how this relates to different religions.
In PE we will be learning gymnastics. We will be identifying different ways of travelling and balancing using our body parts as well as using different apparatus such as benches, mats and gym tables. Our PE days will be Wednesdays and Thursdays.
This half term we will be creating observational drawings of buildings. We will be inspired by the artist Alexis Deacon and we will use relief techniques to create a cityscape from the core text Beegu.
In Music, we are exploring the element of music, including pulse and rhythms. To help us do this we will focus on the social question: How can we make friends when we sing together? We will use this question when we play with instruments, improvise and compose our own songs.
In RHE, we will be exploring different feelings and emotions through lots of talk and discussions in circle time. We will be discussing different body parts and the importance of them.
