Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic half term break and are now rejuvenated and eager to continue their exciting year at Foxfield. We are thrilled to present the Year 6 curriculum newsletter for the second half of the spring term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this upcoming period. You will also see the words that will be used for the spelling assessments this half term.
In English, our core text will be The Landlady by Roald Dahl. This is a chilling short story about a young man named Billy Weaver who checks into a peculiar bed and breakfast with a mysterious landlady. Children will be using their analytical skills to explore themes of suspense and deception.
Our learning in maths will move through different units this half term, including area, perimeter and volume, statistics and angles.
We will be continuing our learning about animals including humans with a focus on a healthy lifestyle and how the heart helps us function day to day. The children will be answering the question "How can we maintain healthy lifestyles?"
In Geography we will answering the the question "Why was the continent of Africa colonised in the late 1800s?" by looking at The Scramble For Africa.
In RHE, we will be looking at how to keep our bodies safe and look at different types of medicines and their uses. We will also be looking at how media manipulates images to fit a narrative.
In PE, we will be developing our understanding of balance and counter tension with partners and how this relates to gymnastics.
In Art, we will be looking at different patterns used within African art and how they have been inspired by nature.
In French, the children will be recapping their knowledge of verbs and beginning to learn about naming parts of the body.
In Music, the children will be answering the question "How Does Music Connect Us with Our Past?" The children will also design and make their own Creative Compositions.
Reading for pleasure daily for a minimum of 25 minutes per day and all multiplication tables up to 12 x 12
Practice weekly spelling list
Your child in year 6 will gradually begin to receive more homework to help them develop the essential organisational and time management skills required for life in secondary school. Furthermore, this also serves to consolidate key knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in their upcoming statutory assessments in the summer term
Here are the spelling lists for the half term. Children will receive a paper copy of the week's spelling list for them to practice at home.
In order to support children's learning in school, we have a few non-negotiables that we ask all children to complete weekly. You can read our expectations by clicking on the home learning offer tab. Beyond these core homework activities, Foxfield provides access to several engaging online platforms for optional additional tasks, for which your child has been given a login. These platforms include Letter-Join for handwriting practice, spag.com for spelling and grammar practice, and Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for multiplication practice. Class teachers will assign specific activities on these platforms, and children are able to regularly participate in fun activities.
These platforms reinforce skills taught in the classroom, with specific activities assigned weekly by the class teacher. For core English skills, children should complete their assigned handwriting activity on Letter-Join weekly and work through the spelling and grammar tasks on spag.com throughout the half term. Multiplication fluency is built through the three-week 'times table battle' on Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS), where daily engagement (minimum 10 minutes) is highly recommended. For broader mathematical comprehension, quizzes will be set on maths.com once every half term. Furthermore, to provide cross-curricular enrichment, a selection of creative tasks covering subjects like reading, maths, science, history, and computing will be set on Purple Mash once per half term, to be completed at your child’s own pace over the course of the half term.
