Welcome back! We trust that you and your children had a fantastic half term break and are now rejuvenated and eager to continue their exciting term at Foxfield. We are thrilled to present the Year 4 curriculum newsletter for the second half of the spring term, where you can explore the incredible learning opportunities that await your children during this upcoming period. You will also see the words that will be used for the spelling assessments this half term.
This half term, children will be exploring the idea of 'identity and diversity' through the core text ‘Tamarind and the star of Ishita.’ They will be working towards creating a travel brochure about India, linked to the cultures explored in the book and desirable places to visit. Through this text, children will explore identity through the ideas of differences and what makes each person unique.
In Maths, we will start by exploring fractions, learning how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers. Children will also begin adding and subtracting fractions from whole numbers and other fractions. We will then move on to decimals, focusing on understanding their relationship to fractions and how to work with them in various calculations.
Please encourage your child to practice their times tables on TT Rockstars, ready for the multiplication check in June.
In RE, Year 4 will focus on the Gurdwara in Sikhism, exploring its role in the community. Children will learn about the Guru Granth Sahib, and the practice of Langar, emphasising values of equality and service.
Through this, we will answer the question, "How is the Gurdwara important to Sikhs?".
Geography
In Geography, we will be looking at the assessment question 'How does the UK compare to China?'. We will research similarities and differences between the two countries, as well as Italy and will compare their human and physical features. We will also be discussing natural disasters that have happened in these countries.
PE will focus on developing their gymnastics skills to improve balance, coordination, and flexibility. They will also engage in team-building games that encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and communication. Throughout these activities, children will practice working together, improving their ability to communicate effectively with their peers and support one another.
In French, we will be learning about school subjects and telling the time (o'clock). This will lead to describing the school day and timetable, using everything we have learned throughout the term.
This half term the children will be looking at pop music from different eras and practising their songs.
In Art, we will explore the work of Pablo Picasso, learning about his unique style and techniques. Children will then create their own self-portraits, inspired by Picasso’s use of shapes, bold colours, and abstract forms. This project will encourage creativity and experimentation with different artistic styles and help students express their individuality through their artwork.
Within RHE, we will be exploring our human rights and the environment in order to work towards discussing our communities and diversity, how we can help to better them.
Reading for pleasure daily for a minimum of 15 minutes per day
Practice of weekly spelling list
All multiplication tables up to 12 x 12
Here are the spelling lists for the half term. Children will receive a paper copy of the week's spelling list for them to practice at home.
To support your child’s learning journey, we have compiled a Home Learning Menu. Your child is already set up and has a secure login for each app, making access simple.
These resources include Letter-Join for handwriting practice, spag.com for spelling and grammar practice, and Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for multiplication practice. Class teachers will assign specific activities on these platforms, and children are able to regularly participate in fun activities.
Children should be encouraged to log into Letter-Join on a weekly basis and complete the activity assigned by their class teacher, linked to the current skill they are learning in class that week. For spelling and grammar, children will be set one activity a week linked to their learning in class. For TTRS, children will take part in a ‘timestable battle’ that will last for three weeks, where daily engagement adds to their final score. The recommended time for this is a minimum of 10 minutes a day. To further support your child’s learning, we will be setting a selection of activities on Purple Mash once every half term. Purple Mash is an online platform containing cross-curricular creative tools and activities that allow children to explore and enhance their knowledge in a fun, engaging way. Your child will be able to work their way through the assigned tasks at their own pace over the course of the half term. The homework will cover a variety of subjects, including core areas such as reading and maths, as well as other curriculum areas like science, history, and computing.
