Our Summer term topic in Nursery is ‘Let's get growing'. We will be using the text ‘A seed in Need’ by Sam Godwin, Through this text we will the theme of sustainable development. The children will experience different vegetables through sensory activities such as smelling and tasting. The children will look at the life cycle of plants and have real life experiences of planting and growing in the outdoor environment.
The core text will introduce the children to a wider vocabulary and we will introduce words like root, shoot, stem, seed, leaves and petals .
The children will further develop their language and social skills such as sharing, cooperating with others in our new garden role play. Role-play allows children to step into someone else's shoes, which is the foundational building block of empathy. Children begin to understand that other people have different feelings, needs, and points of view. In a role-play scenario children are forced to negotiate, take turns, and find compromises to keep the game going. It encourages collaborative play, helping children move from "parallel play" (playing near others) to"group play" (working toward a common goal).
We will continue our theme of patterns by creating patterns with movements. The children will continue, copy and create repeating patterns using their bodies.
We will be using this last term to concentrate on the children's mark making skills. They will be given the opportunity to make marks in different ways including large chalks outside and writing for a purposr in the role play area. This will help develop a stronger pencil control and form the letters in their names.
The children will be revisiting their learning on repeat patterns. Children will observe patterns in the environment, animals and their own clothes. Nursery children will also revisit 2D shapes before learning about 3D shapes. As they learn about the 3D shapes, the children will be able to identify these shapes in real life within their environment. To support their learning, Nursery children will be given opportunities to build with 3D shapes to create their own structures and models. We can’t wait to see the results.
We are excited to create art using natural materials including petals and seeds. Using the natural colours of seeds (the deep reds of kidney beans, the yellows of corn, the greens of lentils) to create patterns. We will integrate the children's love of music by filling containers with different seeds to explore how volume and pitch change (e.g., heavy broad beans make a "thud," while tiny mustard seeds make a "hiss").
Children learn to identify the key features of living things and understand that plants need specific conditions to thrive. Children will watch the transformation from a dry, dormant seed to a sprouting seedling. They will learn through hands-on experience that the bean needs water, light, and warmth. This is the perfect time to introduce words like root, shoot, stem, seed and petals.
