Publishing

"Having internet connected devices in the hands of our students gives them access to the world! So, why do we continue to ignore the possible audience beyond the four walls of their classroom? The benefit is two-fold:

  • gives students a greater sense of purpose

  • it provides an opportunity to discuss and evaluate the safety & digital footprint of what is being shared and to what audience

How and where to publish

  • School newsletter

  • Your school's website (create a tab or section where it showcases student work...like a publishing portal)

  • YouTube

  • Google Sites

  • Soundcloud (for podcasts and audio creations)

  • Blogs

Considerations

  • Each time students publish, discuss:

    1. Who exactly is the audience?

    2. Is private information is being shared?

    3. What do we need to be aware of or modify before publishing

    4. Are the settings correct?

  • Social media platforms (including YouTube, Twitter etc.) all have a minimum age requirement of 13. Therefore at no stage should teachers/schools be supporting students creating their own accounts.

  • Creating a school-wide set of expectations and/or checklist before publishing online

    • for example: no full names, no photos with names, no personal information

  • Obtaining parental consent and/or checking with your school's privacy policy
