THINGS TO AVOID
GOING TO THE POOL AND/OR PRACTICING SKILLS ON YOUR OWN - There will be an opportunity during lessons when I will invite a family member or guardian into the water and show you the best ways to work and play with your child. Until then, please be patient and do not take your child to the pool. Swimming outside of lessons can actually delay the acquisition of skills by days or weeks.
ALL FLOTATION DEVICES - This includes Water Wings, Arm Bands, Puddle Jumpers, Life Jackets/Vests, Noodles, Pool Mats, and Flotation Rings/Tubes. All of these devices encourage a vertical body posture and do the work for the child. The lifesaving body posture we are teaching your child is horizontal and they will learn to attain that posture independently, without the support of a device. The only exception is a Life Vest when on a boat or in open water. A proper life vest does not have a collar that rests at the back of the neck, is appropriately sized for your child's height and weight, and must be USA Coast Guard Approved.
STANDING ON POOL STEPS, SUN DECKS, OR HOT TUB LEDGES - Your child should sit to play in water at this time. Standing encourages and reinforces the vertical body posture and allows the steps to do the work for them. If your child is consistently reinforced for being vertical, then they will begin to consistently try to swim vertically. Water tables or sprinklers are a great option for hot-weather play until your child is skilled.
EATING LESS THAN 1 ½ HOURS PRIOR TO LESSONS. 2 HOURS FOR DAIRY/FATTY FOODS - What and when your child eats will impact their buoyancy. If they are full or bloated, lessons may be difficult and uncomfortable and may cause us to end early.
EATING APPLES OR PEACHES - These foods increase the amount of gas in your child's stomach, making it more difficult to assess their level of fatigue. This can also impact their buoyancy, and make lessons difficult and uncomfortable and may cause us to end early.
SIBLING SUPERVISION - My attention needs to be solely on your swimmer. Please keep other siblings out of the pool and relatively still/seated on the pool deck, so as to not provide a distraction to me and/or your swimmer.
TWO-TOWEL POLICY - Always bring two towels for your swimmer. The first will be folded and serve as the sanitary base and absorption layer where I will place your child after lessons. The second towel will be used for drying.
SWIM DIAPERS - Two non-disposable swim diapers must be worn by any swimmers who are not yet potty-trained. This is to ensure we keep any accidents contained so lessons can continue and we don't have to close and treat the pool.
ARRIVE EARLY - In order to skill as many children as possible during a session, my lessons are scheduled back to back. Please arrive 10 minutes early for your lessons so your child is ready to get in the water at their scheduled time. If you are late, your child's lesson will have to be cut short.
NON-ATTENDANCE - Refunds/Credits are not available due to student non-attendance. Due to the 6-week structure of lessons, I am not able to fill your child's space with another student. Their spot will be reserved until they are able to return. If you suspect your child may need to miss a lesson due to an illness, please let me know as soon as possible.
B.U.D.S (Bowel, Urine, Diet, Sleep) DISCUSSION - In order to ensure safety, each lesson will begin with a daily health questionnaire. Lessons may need to be cancelled if any information provided conflicts with our health and safety standards (ex: unexplained rash, fever over 100.2 within 24 hours). Please read your parent handbook for more information on daily health and safety expectations.
EXTENDED ILLNESS - 3 or more missed lessons, or an illness that requires a visit to the doctor will require you to fill out a Missed Lesson Update (MLU) on the ISR Registration page. Lessons cannot resume until I receive clearance from our team of Registered Nurses. Makeup lessons may be provided per instructor discretion and mutual agreement with the parent, provided pool availability.
CANCELLED LESSONS - Refunds or Credits will be provided should I have to cancel lessons due to weather, pool issues, or personal reasons.
Restrooms/Changing rooms are not available. Please plan accordingly and have a contingency plan (ex: On-The-Go-Potty in the back of the car).
Street parking is available. In order to avoid street congestion, please do not arrive more than 10 minutes early for your lesson.
Exact pool location will be provided once you are registered and approved by ISR.
