What is PHISCC
PHISCC stands for Pathfinder HI Survey Coordination Committee. It started in 2009 as a forum to coordinate activities on the way to the HI surveys on SKA pathfinders and precursors. At that time, PHISCC members were primarily the PIs of the major HI surveys.
With the HI surveys in full swing – some even completed – the goal of PHISCC has evolved into bringing HI astronomers together to facilitate the discussion of results and techniques, strengthening our science and our community, and engaging early-career researchers. This is done primarily through the organisation of yearly PHISCC workshops, whose focus is still on the SKA pathfinders and precursors.
PHISCC workshops
PHISCC workshops include typically a mix of plenary talks and discussions, followed by smaller, more focused break-out sessions. Past workshops include:
2009 - Bunker Bay, Australia, 16-18 Nov 2009
2010 - Arniston, South Africa, 2-6 May 2010
2011 - Perth, Australia, 2-4 Feb 2011
2012 - Cape Town, South Africa, 29 Jan-3 Feb 2012
2013 - Sydney, Australia, 17-21 Jun 2013
2018 - Pingtang, China, 11-15 Jun 2018
2020 - online due to Covid, 11-13 May 2020
PHISCC membership
With the current format, PHISCC includes 7 HI astronomers covering a range of expertise both in terms of science topics and telescopes. The plan is for 2-3 PHISCC members to be replaced every year to keep PHISCC lively and representative of an evolving community.
The current PHISCC members are:
Paolo Serra (chair; INAF - Cagliari)
Barbara Catinella (ICRAR)
Thijs van der Hulst (Kapteyn Institute)
Nissim Kanekar (NCRA - TIFR)
Elizabeth Mahony (CSIRO - ATNF)
D.J. Pisano (University of Cape Town)
Jing Wang (Kavli)
Previously, PHISCC has been chaired by Lister Staveley-Smith and Marc Verheijen.
