The POLIFEMO (Panoramic Multifunctional Sensor for Small/Micro Satellite) is a multifunctional space sensor that integrates within a single unit different capabilities (e.g., star tracker, sun sensor and earth sensor) to be used integrated in small satellites for enhancing attitude control and situational awareness features for vehicles cooperation, anti-collision and rendezvous.
There is an increasing number of large, small or miniaturized satellites orbiting around the Earth and providing many services, such weather monitoring, imaging, surveillance, communication and TV signal relay, agriculture monitoring, navigation signals (Global Navigation Satellite System, GNSS), and satellite-mobile-phone systems.
The classification used to categorize these satellites by their weight distinguishes large satellites above 500 kg and small, micro and nano satellite that are generally from less than 500kg to 0,01Kg.
POLIFEMO may reduce mission/satellite cost improving system versatility.
