STEAM Practices for Italian TeacherZ
SPRITZ (STEAM Practices for Italian Teacherz) is a teacher training programme organized by the National Astronomy Education Coordinator (NAEC) Italy with the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education Center Italy (I‑OAE) and INAF and SAIt (Italian Astronomical Society).
The first edition brought together a vibrant group of Italian secondary school teachers for an immersive professional development experience at Città della Scienza in Naples from 12 to 14 September 2025. The project aims at building a community of practice around innovative STEAM teaching methodologies such as Inquiry‑Based Learning (IBL), Game‑Based Learning (GBL), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Across three days of workshops, hands-on activities and collaborative design sessions, 20 selected teachers from lower and upper secondary schools worked closely with experts to integrate these approaches into their curricula. Highlights included interactive inquiry activities like “Exoplanets in a Box”, which showcased how astronomy can spark curiosity and deepen scientific thinking.
Participants left SPRITZ highly motivated to bring new practices into their classrooms, supported by ongoing mentoring from the NAEC Italy team throughout the 2025/26 school year. The project laid the foundations for a growing network of educators committed to STEAM innovation, confirming the value of astronomy as a catalyst for engaging, student‑centered learning.
