Equal Day is an international celebration of equality, peace, diversity, sustainability, and empathy through astronomy, held annually around the 20th March, the day that marks the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn equinox in the Southern Hemisphere.
For some days around the equinox, when day and night are equal everywhere on Earth, humans are reminded of the balance inherent in nature. The initiative aims at bringing people together across borders, united by a shared wonder for the cosmos, through stargazing activities and educational events.
To join Equal Day, participants around the world organise public events and register them on the Equal Day website (click here to access the website). The events consist of several activities, including a mandatory activity such as creative photography, a message of peace, singing and/or dancing to the Equal Day song, or a Zoom meeting.
Equal Day started in 2025 after the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education Center Italy adopted the proposal by Jean-Pierre Saghbini, National Astronomy Education Coordinator (NAEC) for Lebanon, which was supported by many other NAECs from the Mediterranean.
