Temporal Anchorings will kick off with opening remarks by members of the gathering organizing committee. Elder Catherine Martin and Isaac Jeddore-Gould will open with a traditional Mi’kmaq welcome ceremony. This will be followed by a conversation between Halifax based artists/filmmakers James MacSwain and Eryn Foster. They will discuss MacSwain’s life and creative work as it relates to artist-run centre culture and the creative communities of Atlantic Canada.

Jumping off of IMAA’s resource sharing network as one existing model to support resource access, Lucas Morneau (Production Manager at Struts Gallery and interdisciplinary artist) and Barbora Racevičiūtė (IMAA National Director) will lead a roundtable where the community will discuss and brainstorm different ways that resources are currently shared and the kinds of collaborations and partnerships that are possible to push that further in view of getting more access to strategic equipment and resources.

Day one ends with a not-to-be-missed shorts screening curated by Lucas Morneau. Framed by Colin Campbell’s 1972 seminal work, Dykelands explores the ebb and flow of gender expression, isolation, masquerade, and dreamworlds from 2SLGBTQIA+ artists working around the Bay of Fundy, pushing against the current like the Petitcodiac tidal bore. 69 minutes followed by a Q&A.

⚓ IMAA's Basis of Unity: Precedents and Futures

What is a Basis of Unity? What does it mean for IMAA to have one now? How can we draw upon it as a foundation for strengthening the media arts sector? Members of IMAA’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee including Yun-Jou Chang, Martha Cooley, Eli Hirtle, and Eusebio Lopez-Aguilar will host this interactive session. Following the outpouring of public support for Anti-Opression and Anti-Colonial movements of the last 4 years, this session is an invitation to collaborate on how we embody values of equity, diversity, inclusion and access in our organizations and in our sector, and what IMAA’s role in that work can be.

With the cost of living skyrocketing, arts organizations are having an increasingly hard time finding affordable office and studio spaces. This round table will be led by CFAT Executive Director Tori Fleming as she discusses permanent solutions with Sebastien Labelle, former Executive Director of the Bus Stop Theatre, Emily Davidson, of the Turret Art Space and Tristian Cleveland of Happy Cities. Using the Halifax Regional Municipality’s recent growth and rapid gentrification as a case study, the panelists will discuss the various methods they’ve tried, successfully and unsuccessfully, to permanently purchase space.

In conversation, Clayton Windatt (Executive Director, Artist-Run Centres and Collectives Conference (ARCA) and Barbora Racevičiūtė will speak about the different advocacy initiatives that have been taken up by the independent arts sector in the past, and think through what actions, considerations and coalitions are needed in the present moment. Following this, the IMAA Advocacy Committee will report back on the concrete work it has been doing and engage the community in planning forthcoming action.

St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival presents its 2024 Films On The Go, a touring selection of short films from the previous festival. This year’s lineup features all Newfoundland and Labrador filmmakers, with Poster Child (Brianna Russell), First Position (Mallory Clarke), Scored by Time (Nicola Hawkins), Hebron Relocation (Holly Andersen), Miss Campbell: Inuk Teacher (Heather Campbell) and The Gaze (Stacy Gardner). Through music, dance, visual arts and personal storytelling, these six films explore how the past informs the people we become, and how our perspectives can shift–over time or in a single moment.
Following a brief intermission, the Halifax Independent Film Festival will present its Atlantic Auteurs program. Atlantic Auters is an annual program focused on showcasing innovative regional shorts hot-off-the-press to our audiences. This year’s program centres around themes of exploration: of self, others, and time, and its relationship to community, culture, and home life. It includes: Me and My Teeth (Anna Quon), Where my Branches Stem (Teresa Kuo), Mello, Judd, and Tooth Floss (Emily Flynn), Somewhere Real (Kate Solar), Something to Do with Brook Water (Todd Fraser), Footnotes (Stephanie Joline), Ghost Story (Luke Hathaway, Aliayta Foon-Dancoes, Liam Ross Gibson, Paul MacIntyre), DWELLING (Brandon Lorimer), and Escape the Usual (Colby Conrad). The program will be introduced by Festival Coordinator Tara Thorne.

Join us at the water (Nathan Green Square on Google Maps) to ground ourselves in the rich cultural landscape of the Atlantic region! In this walking tour, we will be visiting a variety of Halifax's artistic spaces, including: the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative, the Khyber Centre for the Arts, Centre for Art Tapes, The Blue Building Gallery, Eyelevel Gallery, and the Hermes Gallery. Please make sure to bring a water bottle and some comfortable shoes!

As the final event of our conference, this closing plenary will feature a conversation with Yun-Jou Chang (Cinevolution), Yuko Fedrau (IMAA), Jennifer Smith (NIMAC), and Barbora Racevičiūtė (IMAA). Together, they will discuss the possibilities of shaping the future of the media arts sector through collaboration. Following their discussion, we will open the conversation to the community so attendees can share their responses from the activity introduced in the Opening Plenary.
We will close our time together with a gift-giving activity to celebrate our shared experience in Halifax. All attendees are encouraged to bring one small object from your organization that you will give to a fellow attendee during this activity.

Join us for the opening night of Everyseeker festival, an annual celebration of genre-fluid music and experimental sound, which runs throughout the weekend. The first night will feature artists Sue Goyette, shn shn, and Gambol Together. Sue Goyette lives in K'jipuktuk (Halifax) and is a poet and educator. She’s published nine books of poems and a novel. Her latest collection is Monoculture (Gaspereau Press, 2022). shn shn is an electronic experimental pop artist who blends lush vocals, meditative beats, and swelling pads, to craft cinematic-inspired music that transcends conventional boundaries. Gambol Together is the collaborative translation of scores created by Alek Green during his residency with EVERYSEEKER. Gambol Together is comprised of Alek Green, Brielle LeBlanc, Campbell McBingbong, Charity Cruz, and Lili Maud Dobell. Qu'est-ce qu'une base d'unité ? Qu'est-ce que cela signifie pour l'AAMI d'en avoir une aujourd'hui ? Comment pouvons-nous nous en inspirer pour renforcer le secteur des arts médiatiques ? Les membres du comité d'équité, de diversité et d'inclusion de l'AAMI, notamment Yun-Jou Chang, Martha Cooley, Eli Hirtle et Eusebio Lopez-Aguilar, animeront cette session interactive. Suite à la vague de soutien public aux mouvements anti-pression et décoloniaux de ces quatre dernières années, cette session est une invitation à collaborer sur la manière dont nous incarnons les valeurs d'équité, de diversité, d'inclusion et d'accès dans nos organisations et dans notre secteur, et quel peut être le rôle de l'AAMI dans ce travail.

Avec le coût de la vie qui monte en flèche, les organismes artistiques ont de plus en plus de mal à trouver des bureaux et des studios abordables. Cette table ronde sera animée par Tori Fleming, directrice générale de CFAT, qui discutera de solutions permanentes avec Sebastien Labelle, ancien directeur général du Théâtre Bus Stop, Emily Davidson de Turret Art Space et Tristian Cleveland de Happy Cities. En utilisant la croissance récente et l'embourgeoisement rapide de la municipalité régionale d'Halifax comme étude de cas, les panélistes discuteront des diverses méthodes qu'ils ont essayées, avec ou sans succès, pour acheter des espaces de façon permanente.

St .John's International Women's Film Festival présente ses Films On The Go 2024, une sélection de courts métrages en tournée du festival précédent. Au cours de cette visite à pied, nous visiterons divers espaces artistiques de K’jipuktuk (Halifax), notamment Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative (AFCOOP), Khyber Centre for the Arts, Centre for Art Tapes, Blue Building Gallery, Eyelevel Gallery et Hermes Gallery. N'oubliez pas d'apporter une bouteille d'eau et des chaussures confortables !

À l'espace principal du Théâtre Bus Stop
Des innovateur·trice·s et des créateur·trice·s (parmi les participant·e·s de la conférence) installeront des "stations" où ils·elles partageront en dix minutes des initiatives qui donnent à réfléchir et des façons rafraîchissantes de faire les choses ! Les petits groupes se déplaçant d'une station à l'autre, leur taille permet aux gens d'entrer facilement en contact avec les présentateur·trice·s. Vous découvrirez rapidement de nouvelles idées et la manière dont elles peuvent être adaptées à votre propre situation.

En tant qu'événement final de notre conférence, cette rencontre de clôture proposera une conversation avec Yun-Jou Chang (Cinevolution), Yuko Fedrau (AAMI), Jennifer Smith (NIMAC), et Barbora Racevičiūtė (AAMI). Ensemble, elles discuteront des possibilités de façonner l'avenir du secteur des arts médiatiques de manière collaborative. Après leur discussion aura lieu une conversation avec la communauté durant laquelle les participant·e·s pourront partager leurs réponses à l'activité lancée à l’ouverture du rassemblement.
Nous conclurons notre temps ensemble par une activité de remise de cadeaux afin de célébrer notre expérience commune à Halifax. Toutes les personnes participantes sont invitées à apporter un petit objet de leur organisme qu'elles remettront à une autre personne lors du rassemblement de clôture. Rejoignez-nous pour la soirée d'ouverture du festival Everyseeker, une célébration annuelle de la musique aux genres fluides et de son expérimental, qui se déroule tout au long du week-end. La première soirée réunira les artistes Sue Goyette, shn shn et Gambol Together. Sue Goyette vit à K'jipuktuk (Halifax) et est poète et éducatrice. Elle a publié neuf recueils de poèmes et un roman. Son dernier recueil est Monoculture (Gaspereau Press, 2022). shn shn est un artiste pop électronique expérimental qui mélange des voix luxuriantes, des rythmes méditatifs et des pads gonflants pour créer une musique d'inspiration cinématographique qui transcende les frontières conventionnelles. Gambol Together est la traduction collaborative des partitions créées par Alek Green pendant sa résidence avec EVERYSEEKER. Gambol Together est composé d'Alek Green, Brielle LeBlanc, Campbell McBingbong, Charity Cruz et Lili Maud Dobell.
