THE FUNCTION OF MATERIALS USED IN THE MAKING OF BATIK
Cotton fabric is used as the medium for batik. A board is used to facilitate applying clay onto the white fabric. Paper clips are used to stabilize the batik fabric, ensuring smooth application of the clay. Clay is applied to prevent the color solution from seeping into the fabric. Users cover the batik pattern lines by applying clay over them.
Inai bottles and “Bottle nozzle refills” are used to store the clay. Needles prevent clogs in the inai bottle or nozzle. Spray bottles are used to store and spray color solution onto the batik fabric. Buckets are used for washing the batik fabric, holding clean water. Mixing trays are used to hold water for washing the clay. Ropes are used to tie to poles for drying batik fabric after washing the clay
PROCESS OF MAKING BATIK
Materials such as fabric, clay, bucket, bottles, paper clips, trays, rope, tissue and bottle spray must be prepared. In the preparation process, fabric and clay also need to prepare. During this process, the fabric must first be wet to ensure the clay to stick. Before applying the clay onto the fabric, make sure the clay is in the right consistency and should be easily spreadable and not too runny.
The second process is applying clay to the fabric. During this process, a sketch or design were already printed to ensure the designing process is smooth. The participants will only have to follow the design. Therefore, the fabric must be wet to make sure that the clay will stick, and it will be easier for the participants to follow the design line. By making the applying process easier the clay must be placed inside the henna bottle. Thus, before applying the clay, the fabric must be first lay on a flat surface. To make it easier to apply the clay, paper clip can be used to clip the design paper and fabric together to prevent them from moving.
Drying process must be done before the dyeing process. In this process, the fabric needs to be dry completely and it may take a few minutes. The drying process were done under the sun in a few minutes.
There are only two colours that were used to dye the fabric which is red and blue. In the dyeing process, a method of spray the dyeing colours were use. The fabric must be fully covered in a dye colour to ensure a deep and even coloration.
After the dyeing process, let the fabric dried again by hanging them on the rope. After the drying process, we can see the final result.
