WHAT LIFE LESSONS DID YOU LEARN FROM SULAM EVENT?
Planning the SULAM event in Kampung Melangkap Baru, Kota Belud, with our team of international and ASTIF faculty students was a fulfilling experience. The main attraction of the event was batik tanah liat, an artistic project that brought people from various backgrounds together and promoted a sense of community. Important life lessons learned from this experience have impacted both our professional and personal growth.
We learned the value of cooperation and flexibility from the SULAM event. Utilising each person's strengths, listening skills, and willingness to compromise were all important when working with diverse students and international participants. It was imperative to have respect for one another, communicate well, and share a commitment. We also gained the ability to quickly adjust and solve issues as they arise, transforming setbacks into chances for development. These teamwork and flexibility lessons will be very helpful for our upcoming projects.
We gained useful project management skills and had the chance to interact deeply with the community by organising the SULAM event. We acquired useful abilities in organisation, time management, and attention to detail that are relevant in both academic and professional situations, from goal-setting and timetable creation to job distribution and coordination. Beyond simply participating in an artistic project, the batik tanah liat activity helped us establish a connection with the Kota Belud community and demonstrated the significance of our efforts and community participation. Our respect for community involvement was strengthened by this experience, which also taught us how important it is for any initiative or event to have meaningful connections and participation.
We gained priceless knowledge in project management, cultural exchange, cooperation, flexibility, and community involvement from the SULAM event in Kota Belud. The significance of teamwork, adaptability, cultural awareness, and community involvement was highlighted by these encounters. We are appreciative of these teachings and the chance to contribute favourably.
2. WHAT DIFFICULTIES/CHALLENGES DID THE GROUP FACE IN PLANNING THIS EVENT?
Planning the SULAM event in Kota Belud was a rewarding experience that provided lots of learning opportunities, but it also comes with some challenges at its fair. These difficulties required us to be adaptable and resourceful, ensuring that the event could proceed successfully.
We had to be flexible and creative in order to overcome the many obstacles that came with organising the SULAM event in Kota Belud. First of all, the different schedules of the local and foreign students made scheduling the event difficult and required a great deal of coordination and negotiation. We also didn't have time to visit the event site in advance, so we had to rely on remote information, which increased the possibility of unforeseen problems. Despite the problems, careful preparation and coordination with local contacts served to reduce possible issues and guarantee an enjoyable event.
We also had to make last-minute adjustments to schedules and acquire additional materials because of unanticipated requirements. Under time constraints, completing these tasks demonstrated the value of quick decision-making and productive teamwork. In addition, the trip to Kota Belud was difficult because of the rainy and slippery roadways, which required cautious navigation for everyone's safety. Luckily, the weather on the actual day of the event was favourable, so we were able to successfully complete all of the scheduled activities without any problems.
3.IF THIS SORT OF EVENT WERE TO HELD AGAIN IN THE FUTURE, WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MADE TO MAKE IT EVEN BETTER?
We would suggest some changes that could improve event SULAM if it were to be held again in the future. Expanding the participant diversity will be our first suggestion. Including a wider range of participants would be effective to increase participant diversity for the future SULAM. Given that the majority of SULAM participants are housewives or older women. We can make sure that the batik-making tradition continues and is passed down to future generations by including kids and young people in the program. This can support the continuation of the art form and the preservation of the cultural heritage. This suggestion can encourage cultural exchange. Younger people can offer fresh viewpoints and ideas, and older participants may share their experience and knowledge to the others.
Next, we suggest that organizing a batik-making competition can be an enjoyable and exciting approach to motivate participants to explore their creative capabilities and demonstrate their abilities. This competition can be done after the students teach the participants about painting and coloring batik. To include a range of interests, the competition structure can be either team-based or individual, with several categories or themes. The size and shape of the batik pieces, the permitted materials and techniques, and the judging standards must all be clearly stated. The best batik pieces might be chosen by judges, community members, or a mix of the two. An exhibition or display to highlight the participants' work, the sharing of thoughts and experiences, and even additional events or workshops to expand on the abilities and knowledge acquired are examples of post-event activities.
If the SULAM event were to take place again, it would need to be more planned and coordinated, more adaptable, and better resource management. This can be accomplished by conducting site surveys and inspection, making sure all participants are informed of the needs and timetable ahead of time, and setting up clear channels of communication. Including backup plans for unforeseen circumstances, guaranteeing the availability of essential materials, on time site visits and fostering an approach of adaptability and flexibility among participants and coordinators can also be beneficial. A successful event can also be linked to enhancing safety and risk management through comprehensive risk assessments. Future SULAM events can be even more effective and enjoyable for all attendees by putting these ideas into practice.
4. DO YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON SULAM? HAS THIS METHOD ASSISTED YOU IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE SUBJECT MATTER?
With the help of this project, students will be able to put their theoretical knowledge to use in practical settings while also learning about the rich history and culture of batik, different types of clay, dyeing techniques, and the complex process of making batik. This project involves ASTIF students and Human Resource students teaching villagers and other participants, including international students, how to make batik using clay. The project cultivates critical teamwork and communication skills by involving students from a variety of backgrounds and local villagers. Students work together in groups, have in-depth discussions with locals, and develop a profound awareness of various viewpoints. Through this immersive experience, they become more aware of social justice issues and expand their cultural horizons in addition to developing a deeper appreciation for the real-world applications of their academic studies. Through these stimulating exchanges, students learn vital interpersonal skills that are essential to their future success in the workplace and personal development, like effective communication and teamwork.
In addition to enhancing students' comprehension of the culture and way of life of the locals, interacting with the community at Kampung Melangkap Baru broadens their awareness of social issues. Through their involvement in the batik project, students acquire an understanding of the rich cultural legacy of batik-making and the various customs and methods that have been transmitted across generations. Because they see directly how their knowledge can be applied to meaningful community contributions, this immersive experience helps them develop a deeper appreciation for the practical implications of their academic studies. Furthermore, the project has an effect outside of the classroom as it helps Kampung Melangkap Baru develop sustainably. From an economic standpoint, it provides chances for regional artists and companies in the batik sector.
Socially, it improves ties between neighbors and encourages cross-cultural interactions between students and locals. Students who actively participate in this service-learning program not only build vital interpersonal skills like effective communication and teamwork but also foster empathy and a sense of responsibility for societal issues. In the end, the project gives students the tools they need to become globally conscious, socially conscious individuals who understand how education can change communities for the better.

The event that stands out most vividly in my memory is our community empowerment initiative, "Empowering Community Through Sulam," held in the picturesque village of Kg Malangkap Baru in Kota Belud. From the moment we arrived in Kg Malangkap Baru, the air buzzed with anticipation. The villagers welcomed us with warm smiles and open hearts. The lush green surroundings and the serene atmosphere of the village provided the perfect backdrop for our activities. Our goal was to introduce the art of sulam, batik-making with clay, coloring, and dyeing, not just as a craft but as a means of self-expression and community bonding.
The batik-making session was the highlight of the event. We began by explaining the process, showing how to use clay to create intricate patterns on fabric. The villagers, young and old alike, gathered around with keen interest. The villagers eyes sparkled with curiosity as they dipped their brushes into the clay, meticulously applying it to the fabric to form beautiful designs. It was heartwarming to see the student and the villagers, passing down their knowledge and skills.
Coloring and dyeing followed, transforming the plain fabrics into vibrant pieces of art. The villagers experimented with different colors, each piece reflecting their unique creativity and cultural heritage. The air was filled with excitement and the occasional exclamation of delight as colors blended beautifully on the fabric. The process was not just about creating batik but also about fostering a sense of achievement and pride in their work.
One of the most memorable moments was seeing the smiles of satisfaction and pride on the faces of the villagers as they held up their completed batik pieces. It was more than just art. it was a testament to their hard work and creativity. The joy was contagious, spreading from the participants to the organizers. We felt a deep sense of fulfillment, knowing that we had helped bring out their artistic talents and provided a platform for them to shine.
As the day drew to a close, we gathered in a circle, reflecting on the day's activities. The villagers expressed their gratitude, and we shared our appreciation for their participation and enthusiasm. It was a moment of mutual respect and admiration, highlighting the success of our event. its also strengthening the bond between us and the villagers.
"Empowering Community Through Sulam" in Kg Malangkap Baru was not just an event but a journey of connection, learning, and mutual empowerment.
