9:00 - 3:00 PM: Communicate to Advocate

Allan Davenport, Laura Nylen, Kristen Mattson, and Dawn Vieira

Now more than ever school librarians must be passionate advocates for their programs. Whether you are one of several librarians in your district or the only one leading the charge, your voice and your story need to be heard! This workshop, facilitated by practicing librarians and the leaders who support them, will give you practical strategies and tools to help you communicate the value of your work to the stakeholders who matter most: community members, district and building administrators, classroom teachers, and your students. The day will include a balance of content delivery, hands-on activities, small group discussions, and time to apply what you’ve learned.

12:00-1:00 PM: Lunch

3:00 - 4:00 PM: Storytelling for School Library Leaders

Kate McDowell

This storytelling workshop will support school librarians in learning how to identify, tell, and encourage others to tell well-evidenced stories about the good works that their organizations accomplish. What is (and is not) storytelling? How do you find stories to tell? How can you involve stakeholders in sharing stories? How does storytelling thinking help support skillful listening?
