A morality play was designed to make the audience consider their own morality and communicate a message to the audience. They do not take place in any specific time period. The main character of these plays were also not specific characters, but rather an everyman. The other characters were morals or religious figures (i.e. God) personified. Morality plays were popular in the 1400s and 1500s. Matching the thinking of the time, these plays supported that men needed to be responsible for their own destiny through their own actions. There are five well-known morality plays, including Everyman, the inspiration for Everybody: The Pride of Life, The Castle of Perseverance, Wisdom, and Mankind.
