At Ilam School, we know that having a positive mindset and self-confidence is important for both our wellbeing and our learning.
In the Junior School, students are encouraged to focus on the idea that they might not be able to do it yet, but that's okay, as long as they don't give up!
Extending on what they have learnt in the Junior School, the Middle School delve further into mindset and how having being open-minded helps learning and trying new things. They specifically explore The Learning Pit.
The Senior School use a zones model alongside regularly discussing fixed and growth mindsets and the power of YET. This zone model encourages students to define their experiences. For example, their comfort zone might be when they are snuggled up in bed, reading or working on a learning problem where they are confident that they have the necessary skills and strategies already. Their stretch zone is where new learning or experiences happen, like zip-lining on camp or perhaps giving a speech at assembly. We use the panic zone to identify those moments when you might be in fight, flight, or freeze mode and are unable to think or continue on.
