Emotional intelligence means being smarter with feelings. It’s about being aware of how feelings influence decisions, relationships, and performance — and learning how to use that awareness to lead a more effective and fulfilling life.
We encourage students to unpack both how they are feeling, and why. Naming emotions and identifying what we could do next is a key focus at Ilam School.
Unpacking different emotions, naming them and role-playing what happens when we are in different emotional states are something we focus on throughout the school. Key to this is finding strategies to help whenever students are stuck in an emotional state that isn't helpful at that time and in that space. (These examples are from Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions.)
Items to support students include different seating options, fidgets, sensory supports and other student-specific options.
Regular 'brain breaks' are also a key tool we use to ensure students are hydrated, oxygenated and are ready to learn!
Emotions can be complex, scary and overwhelming. How can we make sense of them, navigate them more effectively, and not feel overwhelmed by them? Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions, or Feelings Wheel, is a valuable resource to make sense of feelings and grow your emotional literacy, one of the foundations of practicing emotional intelligence.
