Koushambi Mitra obtained her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Presidency College, University of Calcutta, in 2009. Mitra then joined as an integrated PhD student at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and developed platinum complexes as light activated DNA crosslinking and anticancer agents. In 2016, she was awarded both MS and PhD degrees from IISc. Thereafter, Mitra did a series of brief postdocs in the US where she transitioned to organic synthesis and chemical biology. She developed unique photocages for drug delivery and activity-based sensors for enzyme detection. In her final postdoc at the University of Chicago, she developed ratiometric sensors for quantitative imaging of organellar ions.
