HI EVERYONE, WE ARE THE GROUP COMPOSED BY MAJA, ANIA AND ASIA AND TODAY WE'LL TALK ABOUT OUR PROJECT ABOUT BODY SHAMING. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY IT AND HAPPY READING.
Why does body shaming cause both psychological and physical problems?
There are many problems of today's young people who are affected by prejudices.
Body shaming is a widespread phenomenon which is why many young people practice it unknowigly. Insulting others is wrong ,as long as we hit their weak points.
Body shaming means making someone feel ashamed of their body or mocking their physical appearance. It is a practice that is imposed on people of age due to a physical characteristic.
Body shaming is insulting another person, and is therefore verbally abusive behavior.
And it can affect any part of our body. People are targeted for the most varied details of physical appearance, from height to build, hair, eyeglasses, dental braces, or any part of the body that is different from other people.
Today we will look at all the problems that body shaming can cause.
To this day there are still verbal criticisms from people, here are some examples.
-CRITICIZING THE APPEARANCE OF A FIRST PERSON
"Of course you're really short"; "Am I wrong or have you gained weight?"; "You can't stand up, but do you eat?"; "Why these pimples?"; and so on.
-CRITICIZING THE APPEARANCE OF A THIRD PERSON
"But X has gained weight?"; "Of course after the pregnancy she never got back in shape"; "What big arms X has".
-COMMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Social networks unfortunately cause serious damage as the victim receives offensive comments about his body under the posts.
-CRITICIZING OUR OWN APPEARANCE BY COMPARING IT TO THAT OF OTHER PEOPLE
Sometimes we address body shaming to ourselves with phrases such as "My legs are really thick compared to yours", "I'm ugly with glasses", "I didn't wear make-up, I'm hideous". In this way, we do not harm others but ourselves.
Unfortunately today even social networks are greatly influenced by this phenomenon where the standards of beauty are higher than reality.
For example we can speak about a famous Italian influencer called Chiara Ferragni.
She posted a photo for an underwear commercial.
She was immediately targeted by haters who wrote offensive words about her body, for example "you're too thin"; "you suck"; "being a mother, which is why she should cover herself".
"I'm rarely really bothered by comments from haters. I find them absurd, mean and inappropriate but having read the worst things about me since I've had an online identity, I'm almost used to it by now. For all my followers DON'T LET THE FEAR OF JUDGMENT OF OTHERS LIMITS NONE OF YOUR CHOICES".
Chiara Ferragni was also a guest at the Italian Song Festival (Sanremo) where she presented herself with a dress against body shaming.
A white dress on which numerous insults are written that the influencer receives every day .
The singer Billie Eilish has been body shamed after a publication of the DAILY MAIL photo shoot. The haters' comments were written shortly after the post went live as "that tummy is pretty awful" and "she's put on weight". Billie responded with an anti-body shaming video titled "not my responsibility". Some verses that we think are more important are the following "you have opinions about my opinions , about my music, about my clothes, about my body".
AN ITALIAN INFLUENCER
Giulia Casati found herself faced with unpleasant comments about her physical appearance, in fact the haters say she has gained weight.
The creator says that she considers those who talk about body positivity false and bad and who actually continue to point out when a person gets fat and loses weight.
Her opinion of her is this "You will continue to hurt until someone tells you the seriousness of the situation."
Finally, she asks to STOP ASSESSING PEOPLE WHO EXPOSE THEMSELVES ON SOCIAL MEDIA WITH UNPLEASANT COMMENTS.
To react to body shaming it's important to REDUCE OTHER COMMENTS TO ZERO.
Even if some comments can hurt, the important thing is to keep moving forward and you must keep the conviction that IF YOU ARE A VICTIM OF BODY SHAMING IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT, and whoever has a problem is not you but whoever is criticizing you.
Unfortunately we live in a society that gives a lot of importance to the physical aspect so as to create real standards to be accepted.
However, many people are not able to reach this "standard" and therefore are discriminated against for this.
For many years, a campaign called "Body Positivity" has been giving a voice through social media to break down these stereotypes.
What can we personally do to help break down body shaming?
We must learn to control words, work on our self-awareness and empathy.
We can also EDUCATE WHO WE ARE CLOSE and we must not be afraid to "correct" a person who even in good faith makes jokes about body shaming.
In this image there are the statistical data of the evolution of the "BODY POSIVITY" campaign over the years.
Speaking of statistics, according to some data, the people who are most insulted live in Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Spain.
They have experienced this first-hand and about 36% have been victimized more than ten times.
Spain is the country with the most cases of body shaming in the world.
Statistics indicate that 94% of teenage girls have been victims of body shaming.
65% of adolescent boys said they have been subjected to criticism and demeaning comments about their physical appearance.
Furthermore, many people have been targeted by people very close to them, for example around 45% are work colleagues, 26% are friends and 19% are family members.
Italians are among the most "confident" in Europe about their physical appearance, in fact the majority of people declare that they feel comfortable with their body, around 59% of the population.
77% of people resort to minor cosmetic "fixes", such as botox injections (4%) or eyebrow tattooing (6%).
While 45% would resort to at least one invasive procedure such as abdominoplasty (12%) or aesthetic nose correction (12%).
In Italy the search for the ideal physical appearance is very resentful.
In our opinion the standards of our society are wrong and very low.
Each of us is perfect as we are all different but equal.
It is not the number of a scale or any measure that makes the person.
We also think that body shaming is one of the "baddest" stereotypes that society can implement, not only because feeling unaccepted can lead to withdrawing into oneself but it can also lead to estrangement from society and sometimes not being able to anymore to reintegrate and feel accepted.
Every unpleasant comment that comes out of people's mouths are real weapons that hurt mentally and physically, so we hope that through Body Positivity body shaming will be able to stop and that people who are victims of this phenomenon will be able to emerge victorious from this real own dark period.
Here are some questions that have inspired us during the course of the work, what do you think? What do you think about the body shaming?
What do you think you can do against this phenomenon?
How do you plan to react to this phenomenon?
How would you react if your friend is body shamed?
How would you react if you were to be body shamed?
THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION!
