WHAT IS BODY-SHAMING?
Hi everyone! We are a group named "Shameless" and we would like to introduce to you our project about a really important topic, especially for our age, which is body-shaming. From this topic comes our group name because we should never be ashamed of ourselves!
Body shaming involves humiliating someone by making inappropriate or negative comments about their body size or shape. As well as “fat shaming,” you may also hear negative comments if you’re underweight or in reference to a specific body part. This type of criticism can be made to others or yourself. It is something you should never do to someone because sometimes words can hurt more than facts and it could even ruin someone's life and lead to depression.
..."She has dreams to be an envy, so she's starving
You know, covergirls eat nothing
She says, beauty is pain and there's beauty in everything
What's a little bit of hunger?
I could go a little while longer, she fades away"...
EVEN CELEBRITIES HAVE SUFFERED BECAUSE OF BODY-SHAMING BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO OVERCOME IT:
Selena Gomez, 30, is a famous singer and actress who was a victim of body-shaming online. Turns out that when she takes her medications for her lupus - a diagnosis she received years ago - she gains water weight. Every harsh comments got worse when she attended the Golden Globes in January 2023. She said that she has enough of people commenting on her body because nobody deserves this. Now her fans are on her side and are difending her to the point she became the most followed woman on social medias.
Armine Harutyunyan is 23, she is originally from Yerevan, Armenia and is a Graphic Design student at the Yerevan State Institute of Fine Arts and Theater. Her distinctive feature is an angular beauty, with an intense face framed by thick eyebrows. A face that got noticed by a talent scout in Berlin, who sent her to an audition at Gucci, catapulting Armine into the world of fashion and its catwalks. She has been included in a list of the 100 most beautiful women in the world and that's where the scandal broke out. Many said she is not suitable to be in the fashion world and criticized her for her "ugliness". She is body-shamed just because she doesn't fit the "standards"
David Harbour, 48, really known for his role in the TV serie "Stranger Things" revealed he was body-shamed while auditioning for a key role in one of the Wolverine films. " I auditioned for one of the Wolverine movies and I bumped into one of the casting directors on the lot, and she was like: "Oh my God, David Harbour! I have the perfect role for you! The blob. You know it's not like you're fat but for this role we need a big guy like you for this character." It was when he went in to read for the role that he was really fat-shamed. The directors saw his real body proportions after he jokingly lifted his shirt and said "here's your blob" and they told him that he was even too fat to play the role.
Body positivity refers to the assertion that all people deserve to have a positive body image, regardless of how society and popular culture view ideal shape, size and appearance. Some of the goals of the body positivity movement include:
Challenging how society views the body;
Promoting the acceptance of all bodies;
Helping people build confidence and acceptance of their own bodies;
Addressing a realistic body standards ;
Body positivity is not just about challenging how society views people based upon their physical size and shape, however. It also recognizes that judgments are often made based on race, gender, sexuality and disability.
Body positivity also aims to help people understand how popular media messages contribute to the relationship that people have with their bodies, including how they feel about food, exercise, clothing, health, identity and self-care.
By better understanding the effect that such influences have, the hope is that people can develop a healthier and more realistic relationship with their bodies.
While body positivity has become increasingly popular, people continue to be confused about exactly what it means. Part of the reason why body positivity is so misunderstood is due to the fact that there are so many different definitions for what the movement means. Depending on who you ask, body positivity can mean:
Appreciating your body in spite on flaws;
Feeling confident about your body;
Loving yourself;
Accepting your body's shape and size.
Body neutrality is a middle-of-the-road approach between body positivity and body negativity. As the term suggests, it is neither loving nor hating your body. It's based on the notions of acceptance and having respect for one's body rather than love.
PROS AND CONS OF BODY POSITIVITY AND BODY NEUTRALITY
If you like affirmations, go for body positivity:
If you're inspired by positive thoughts and affirmations, body positivity might be your thing. Doctors say positive thoughts can help your mood and rewire negative thoughts. Body positivity can also help dissolve thoughts that we might have picked up from childhood or society.
If affirmations don't seem authentic try body neutrality:
On the other hand, if positive affirmations seem a little too "Stuart Smalley" for you, body neutrality may be the place to start. Being positive when you truly don't feel that way might seem inauthentic and not coherent with how you genuinely feel. It's huge leap from "I hate my body" to "I love it". By going in the direction of "I can accept my body" you take out any indications of "good" or "bad". And that might simply be closer to where you are.
OUR OPINION:
From our point of view this topic is a really important one because we think that in our current society being criticized for our appearance, body and skin color is something very frequent. We also think that we should all be free to live our life like we want, loving ourselves just the way we are. So if you are suffering because of the harsh comments of the others, for us, you should try to not mind what they say because the others might just be jealous of you and about the fact that you are okay with your body while they're not. Furthermore to overcome your sufference you should never take everything for yourself and maybe fall into depression but instead attempt to talk about it with someone that you can trust and that can help you. We can understand that it might not be easy to do and it's a lot easier to say but just try. In the end everyone is beautiful like this, like we are and we should never try to change the way we are for someone else.
"...She don't see her perfect
She don't understand she's worth it
Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface
Oh-oh, oh-oh
So to all the girls that's hurting
Let me be your mirror
Help you see a little bit clearer
The light that shines within..."
"...There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark
You should know you're beautiful just the way you are
And you don't have to change a thing
The world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful
We're stars and we're beautiful..."
