Abstract: The talk will describe several facets of mathematics in information technology, in particular its role in online security. In the future, the big challenge will be math in the life sciences. We shall highlight this important role mathematics is going to play.

Prof. Kumar Murty is a mathematician of Indian origin working as a professor at the University of Toronto, Canada. Prof. Murty is also the director of the prestigious Fields institute. Prof Kumar Murty has done several influential works in the areas of analytic number theory, algebraic number theory, arithmetic algebraic geometry and information security. Prof Murty is a wonderful teacher and has authored several articles and books. Prof Murty is founder of GANITA lab, co-founder of Prata Technologies and PerfectCloud. Prof Murty also has 2 US patents (a very uncommon feat for Mathematicians). Prof Murty is bestowed with several awards for his vast contributions. To name a few, Coxeter-James prize (9191-92), inventor of the year 2011, University of Toronto. Prof Murty is elected fellow of several prestigious societies, most notably he is a fellow of the royal society of Canada. He is also an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. Prof Murty has played several administrative roles like secretary of the royal society of Canada, vice president of Canadian Mathematical Society and many more. He is also interested in philosophy.
