Maryam Mirzakhani was an Iranian mathematician born on May 12th, 1977. She was awarded the fields medal for her work surrounding the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. Thus, she became both the first and to date, the only woman and the first Iranian to be given the award.
