The Department of Economic Sciences at IISER Bhopal was set up in 2017 to promote research and training in all areas of Economics. The research interests of the current faculty span microeconomics, game theory, political economics, trade theory, industrial organization, public economics, social choice theory, corporate finance, option pricing, behavioural economics, agriculture economics and environmental economics.
The department currently offers two academic programmes. One is a Ph.D programme, and another is a 4-year BS programme with the option to obtain a BS-MS (Dual Degree) in Economic Sciences by spending an additional year on a research project (MS Thesis) under the supervision of a faculty.
The Economic Sciences department at IISER Bhopal is one of the few in the country to offer a 4-year BS. Students are exposed to most areas of economics which enable them to pursue a research career in economics and secure employment in the industry.
The department currently has six regular faculty members and three visiting/Adjunct faculty members. It is actively hiring from all areas of economics. Six students are pursuing the doctoral programme, 18 students are pursuing a Master's Thesis (BS-MS), and more than 130 students are in their undergraduate BS with the department.
In 2022, many students graduated with a BS and got jobs at places like Deloitte, Nomura etc. Some of our students got selected for master's programmes at IIMs, Yale University, North Carolina State University, Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, King's College London (UK) etc.
IISERs were created through the Ministry of Education, Government of India proclamation to promote quality education and research in science and related areas. The first two IISERs (Pune and Kolkata) were established in 2006. This was followed by an Institute at Mohali (2007), Bhopal & Trivandrum (2008), Tirupati (2015), and Berhampur (2016). IISERs were incorporated as Institutions of National Importance under the NIT (Amendment) Act, 2012 (NIT Act 2007). The Act was further amended in 2014, entitled the NITSER ACT 2014. Each IISER is a degree-granting autonomous institute.
IISER Bhopal aims to provide quality science education to UG and PG students. The prime focus of the Institute is to integrate science education with research. Also, the Institute is committed to imparting high ethical values and creating social and environmental awareness.
The vision of the Institute is to provide high-quality education to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students. The Institute also aspires to contribute to society through teaching and research to help achieve global sustainability. Further, the Institute aims to produce leaders in science and related disciplines.

Bhopal is a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of India’s greenest cities. The city has two main lakes: Upper and Lower Lake. On the banks of the Upper Lake is Van Vihar National Park, home to tigers, lions, and leopards. The State Museum has fossils, paintings, and rare Jain sculptures. Taj-ul-Masjid is one of Asia’s largest mosques, with white domes, minarets, and a huge courtyard. Bhopal is well-connected to all the big cities of India. Raja Bhoj Airport is the primary airport of Bhopal, located around 15 km from the city centre in the Bairagarh suburban area on National Highway 12. Bhopal Junction railway station is on one of the two main Delhi to Mumbai railway lines and the main line to the southern state capitals of Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.
