Purpose of the J-1 Teacher Program
The purpose of the Exchange Visitor Program is to provide foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in educational and cultural programs in the United States and return home to share their experiences, and to encourage Americans to participate in educational and cultural programs in other countries. Exchange visitors enter the United States on a J visa [22 CFR 62.1(b)].
The J-1 Teacher Program allows for foreign teachers who fulfill the requirements to teach in accredited primary and secondary schools in the United States.
IIEEX's J-1 Teacher Program has a special interest in STEM as we believe that STEM education is the key to raising a generation of climate change and global health leaders. IIEEX is committed to increasing access in STEM education and early exposure to STEM, particularly in preschools and elementary schools. increase scientific literacy in society as a whole.
Therefore, our focus is on attracting foreign STEM teachers as well as teachers in other fields as STEM is not just about science but also about arts and humanities, for example. This is in line with the "Biden-Harris Administration Actions to Attract STEM Talent and Strengthen our Economy and Competitiveness" from January 21, 2022 as well as the the U.S. Departments of State and Education Joint Statement of Principles in Support of International Education issued in July 2021.
The Exchange Visitor Program is a cultural exchange program, not a work program and you are required to participate in cultural activities, and follow your training plan.
All exchange visitors are expected to return to their home country upon completion of their program in order to share their exchange experiences. Home country physical presence requirement may apply to some participating exchange visitors. Please see here for details.
