Frequently Asked Questions
What is Virtus Training?
Virtus training is a program that teaches how to prevent, identify, respond, and report abuse of children and vulnerable adults, particularly sexual abuse. Vulnerable adults can include the elderly, individuals with mental or physical disabilities, or any adult in an otherwise vulnerable state.
What is the Code of Conduct?
The Code of Conduct is a document outlining policies, behaviors, and expectations the Archdiocese of Denver has laid out for all employees and volunteers. All such employees and volunteers are required to agree to and abide by everything in the Code of Conduct in order to maintain the safety and good faith of all those that the church serves.
What is the Hold Harmless Form?
The Hold Harmless Form is a legal agreement required from all volunteers prior to service. The form requires agreement not to sue the parish/archdiocese for expenses if you are injured while volunteering. It also explains our insurance policy, entitlements of volunteers, and worker's compensation policies, in addition to providing healthcare information in case of an injury/emergency.
Why do I have to do Virtus training?
Because it takes a village (or a parish) to protect our children and vulnerable adults. It is important for all staff and volunteers to be knowledgeable and vigilant when it comes to preventing conditions that enable abuse, recognizing abuse when it is taking place, and knowing how to respond and report abuse. Abuse exists in every area of our society, and approximately 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 5 boys will experience sexual abuse during their childhood. Many of these cases go unrecognized and unreported. Through Safe Environment Training, we want to empower YOU to make a difference in putting a stop to abuse in schools, homes, churches, and everywhere else.
Why do I need to have a background check?
We are committed to the safety of those we serve. Often, known abusers and offenders are able to infiltrate trusted organizations simply because nobody checks their history. Therefore, we run background checks on all employees and volunteers as a preventative measure.
