Addition Concepts

The children may continue to master addition

concepts by drawing two sets and bringing them

together or use some type of counters.

(buttons, coins, pieces of candy or cereal, etc.)

Another way to add is by using the

number line.

When adding the number sentence

5 + 2 =

Go to 5 on the number line and take 2 steps forward

and you will land on 7.

5 + 2 = 7

Develop the concept of always starting with the larger number,

whether the number sentence is

5 + 2 or 2 + 5.

(When we begin with subtraction skills, the concept of always starting with the larger number

will already be mastered).

Double and Doubles + 1

Note: Numbers in bold are doubled

Vocabulary

Doubles fact- Both addends are the same

5 + 5 = 10

Doubles + 1- Double the lesser number and add 1 to that sum.

4 + 5 = 9

4 +4 = 8 and 8 + 1 = 9

Memorize these addition facts:

0 + 0 = 0

1 + 1 = 2

2 + 2 = 4

3 + 3 = 6

4 + 4 = 8

5 + 5 = 10

6 + 6 = 12

Three Addends

Concept: Only 2 numbers can be added at a time.

  • Note: All numbers in bold are the first step (combination of 2 numbers).

4-->4 + 1 = 5

1

+2-->5 + 2 = 7

_______

7

4-->4 + 3 = 7

1

+2-->1 + 2 = 3

_______

7

4-->4 + 2 = 6

1-->1 + 6 = 7

+2

_______

7

Subtraction Concepts

Vocabulary- minus

Develop subtraction as the separating or taking away.

The main idea for the children to understand is...

"How many are left?"

Use counters or drawings, start with a whole set and take away.

5 - 3 = 2 How many are left?

(read as: 5 minus 3 equals 2)

If using a number line, count backward.

ALWAYS subtract from the larger number.

Think in Tens

To Express numbers to 100 as tens and ones.

2 tens and 7 ones = 27 5 tens and 4 ones = 54

1 ten and 2 ones = 12 4 tens and 0 ones = 40

6 tens and 1 one = 61 9 tens and 9 ones = 99

To compare 2- digit numbers using symbols

is less than is equal to is greater than

< = >

73 > 48 73 is greater than 48

17 < 71 17 is less than 71

62 = 62 62 is equal to 62

To order numbers to 100 and identify the numbers just before, between, and just after.

27, ____, ____, 30, ____, 32, ____, ____ , ____, 36

75, ____, 77, ____, ____, ____, 81, ____, 83

After Before Between

94 ____ ____ 50 37 ____ 39

40 ____ ____ 68 19 ____ 21

Even and Odd Numbers

Even numbers end with 0 2 4 6 8

Odd numbers end with 1 3 5 7 9

Count by 2s
