The CVDA Company Team is SO excited for the upcoming season! The amount of growth we have seen across all groups this past year has been both impressive and inspiring.
Learning company placements can be both exciting and unnerving, often resulting in an emotional reaction. You are exactly where you need to be on your dance journey. Your placement for the upcoming season is determined by the CVDA Senior Level Staff who have a combined total of over 100 years of dance experience and have worked with all of the dancers for the past 12 months. We understand how important this is to each and every one of you and hope that you trust that we have your dancer’s best interest in mind as we stand behind our placements. Please remember that these group placements only represent a small portion of your full dance training experience for the upcoming year. If you are looking for a more individualized experience, that is where solos/duos/trios come into play.
There are a number of factors that play into placement and those include:
Your age
Your dance skills by genre
Your willingness and ability to take corrective feedback
Your physical discipline in class and rehearsal
Your mental discipline and focus in class and rehearsal
Your emotional and mental resilience
Your facial expression/performance/storytelling abilities and range
Your improvement over the past season
Your commitment and attendance to class and rehearsal
Your strength and flexibility
Your scheduling availability
Your attitude and outlook on growth
Comparing your dancer’s journey to another dancer’s journey based on what YOU know about them is both rude, inappropriate, and unfair. i.e. well if THEY are in that group, then my kid should be and vice versa. “No way I’m dancing with THEM.” Honey, every dancer has been that dancer at some point. Just look at 12 year old Kristen to the left. Can’t even point her toes properly.
Dancers are NEVER placed in a group to be held back or punished. Dancers should all have seasons where they are at the bottom of a group, the middle of a group or the top of a group. This year, you will see that we have kept our groups larger. This is due to 1 main factor - scheduling restrictions/availability of our incredible choreography staff and our desire to limit the number of days and hours dancers are training and families are paying for. If we had more group options, dancers would have to train on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays or have less weekly class level options.
Lastly, I want to remind everyone that I grew up dancing and competing and have raised 3 daughters, one of whom just graduated, as a part of our Company program at CVDA. It is of the utmost importance to me that every dancer has the same opportunities for success, support and open communication about their journey. If you are not a graduating senior this year, you have time to reach your goals. Many of the Company dancers are just entering middle school - that is another 7 years of training and competing ahead of you…do NOT lose your marbles if you aren’t in Senior Small. Back to goals: I would love to sit down and talk to you about those goals and craft a success plan that begins with the most recent year’s evaluations, instructor corrections in classes and judges feedback.
I love you, I’m proud of you, I believe in you and every day no matter which group you’re in I’m going to hold you to the highest standard I can and help you get there.
<3 Kristen
